Every year, anime fans eagerly await the results of various awards shows. While international fans often look forward to the Crunchyroll Awards, the NewType Awards are very popular in Japan. The winners of the NewType Awards have been announced, recognizing not only the best anime of the year, but also the most popular male and female characters as voted by fans for 2025.
Hitori Gotō won in both the female and male categories, representing ‘Bocchi the Rock!’ for the female win and ‘Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!’ for the male win. This outcome surprised many international fans, who had anticipated winners with greater global popularity, like Sung Jinwoo from ‘Solo Leveling’ or Maomao from ‘The Apothecary Diaries’.
Japan’s NewType Awards Decides The Best Main Characters of 2025
Japanese anime fans eagerly anticipate the NewType Awards every year. Hosted by NewType, a popular monthly anime magazine, the awards recognize excellence in anime across various categories. These include best anime series, best film, directing, and voice acting, as well as the best male and female characters. The winners for best male and female characters have recently been announced, and the results may be unexpected.
Hitori Gotō Is 2025’s Best Female Protagonist
I’m so thrilled the NewType Awards recognized Hitori Gotō as the best female character! She’s absolutely fantastic – the star of the incredible series ‘Bocchi the Rock!’ – and totally deserves the win.
‘Bocchi the Rock!’ features Hitori, a shy but incredibly skilled musician. As the lead guitarist and songwriter for the band Kessoku, she’s quickly become a fan favorite.
Kazuhiko Nukumizu is the Best Male Main Character of the Year
The winner in the male category was Kazuhiko Nukumizu, a character from the recently popular anime, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
Kazuhiko Nukumizu is the main character in this heartwarming anime, and viewers have become very interested in his story. It begins when he comforts a girl after she experiences heartbreak, and soon he finds himself befriending other women going through similar situations.
The anime Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! has been very successful, which explains Kazuhiko’s popularity. It even won the NewType award for Anime of the Year!
Overseas, Solo Leveling’s Sung Jinwoo Is The MC Of The Year
Fans outside of Japan were surprised by the winners of the NewType awards. Both Makeine and ‘Bocchi the Rock!’ are lesser-known series, making their wins unexpected.
During Crunchyroll’s 2025 Anime Awards, international fans chose their own favorite character, and their preferences differed significantly from those in Japan. Neither Kazuhiko Nukumizu nor Hitori Gotō won the top spot. Instead, Sung Jinwoo, the main character from the popular anime Solo Leveling, proved to be the most beloved character outside of Japan. Fans are excited to see what happens with Sung Jinwoo’s story in the future, and hope for more adventures in 2026.
