Jason Bourne Franchise Up for Grabs: Who Will Be the New Spy Boss?

The iconic James Bond series, which is cherished by many, has recently been acquired by Amazon MGM Studios. Meanwhile, another major espionage franchise is on the hunt for fresh ownership.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, WME (William Morris Endeavor) is seeking a potential buyer for the Jason Bourne franchise, which is based on the works of author Robert Ludlum. WME, in partnership with Robert Ludlum’s estate, is actively searching for a company to purchase the rights to Ludlum’s entire literary catalog, encompassing the Bourne franchise among other works. The Hollywood Reporter speculates that Universal may reacquire these rights, but discussions have also reportedly taken place with Netflix, Apple, and Skydance.

The latest film in the Bourne series, released in 2016, is titled “Jason Bourne.” This movie includes the recurring character Nicky Parsons (played by Julia Stiles). Based on Ludlum’s novels, this franchise revolves around Matt Damon’s character Jason Bourne, a CIA operative suffering from amnesia. The series began with “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, followed by “The Bourne Supremacy” in 2004 and “The Bourne Ultimatum” in 2007. “The Bourne Legacy” appeared on screens in 2012, while “Jason Bourne” was launched four years later. In contrast to the previous films, “The Bourne Legacy” did not feature Matt Damon; instead, Jeremy Renner portrayed an agent named Aaron Cross. If you’re a fan of Netflix spy shows like “The Recruit” and “The Night Agent,” you might also enjoy the Jason Bourne movies.

According to THR, it remains uncertain if Matt Damon will reprise his role as Jason Bourne. Given the deep connection Damon has with this character, it’s tough to envision another actor stepping into the role. During interviews for ‘Jason Bourne’ in 2016, he revealed that he underwent intense physical preparation and followed a strict diet to embody the character. Also, there was a gap of almost ten years between ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ in 2007 and ‘Jason Bourne’ in 2016 because they wanted to ensure they had a compelling storyline before proceeding with the film.

We’ve been eager to tackle this project for quite some time due to our affection for the character. Winning an audience’s trust is no easy feat, so we didn’t jump in right away. Instead, we patiently waited for about a decade and crafted a compelling story. Here’s hoping that our efforts will result in something that captivates viewers.

The Bourne series has consistently performed exceptionally well at the cinema, and it’s likely that a new installment will follow suit. As per Box Office Mojo, the initial film, “The Bourne Identity,” raked in approximately $121 million, while the latest release, “Jason Bourne,” earned around $162 million.

Since the release of “Jason Bourne” in 2016, Matt Damon has made some intriguing choices in his career. He co-wrote the script for the 2021 historical drama “The Last Duel” and starred as Jean DE Carrouges in the movie. Additionally, he played Leslie Groves in the 2023 hit “Oppenheimer” and lent his voice to the 2024 animated film “IF”. Fans are eagerly waiting to see if Damon will bring back his iconic character for another thrilling spy adventure in the Bourne franchise, but it’s currently unknown where the series might head next or what its subsequent movie might be about.
