Next year, you’ll see the long-awaited debut of Supergirl on the big screen. Milly Alcock has been cast as the main character, with a host of other characters from DC Comics joining her in this cinematic adventure. One of these characters is particularly thrilled about how they will bring their role to vibrant life.
Titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” an upcoming superhero film from DC Studios, focuses on the story of Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin who survived the demise of their home planet, Krypton. In a future project titled “Superman,” we will see Stella Alcock take on the role of Supergirl for the first time. Simultaneously, “Supergirl” boasts an impressive cast that includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruth Marye Knoll, and Jason Momoa as Lobo. Previously associated with the defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU), where he portrayed Aquaman, Momoa has now joined James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU by playing his dream role—bringing Lobo from DC Comics to life. In a recent interview, Momoa provided fresh insights about his upcoming DC character.
A short while ago, Momoa had an interview with ScreenRant to publicize his upcoming film titled “A Minecraft Movie“, set for release next month. During this chat, he shared his excitement over embodying a role he’s long aspired to play, stating, “This is the character I’ve always desired to portray. The comic was a favorite of mine, so I must admit, I’m quite apprehensive about it. It seems like an obvious fit for me. This part is quite substantial,” Momoa mentioned. The star of “Fast X” was cautious not to divulge too much, but he subtly hinted at the potential similarities between its portrayal and the comics. Momoa added:
I’d rather not reveal too many details, but let me tell you, our portrayal seems incredibly accurate to the character. He’s quite gruff and rough, and… well, the bike is really impressive.
Previously, Safran talked about Lobo’s appearance in Supergirl during an interview with The Nerds of Color in February. He mentioned that the film’s director, Craig Gillespie, was a fantastic collaborator when they worked together on fine-tuning Schoenaerts’, Alcock’s, and Momoa’s looks for the movie. When asked about when fans could expect to see Momoa’s first official look as Lobo, Gunn indicated that it would take some time. In other words, it seems like we have to wait a while before we get a glimpse of Momoa as Lobo. After a text exchange between the two following the announcement of DC Studios, Gunn was swayed to offer Momoa the role. When Momoa officially announced his casting on Instagram, Gunn responded with a warm welcome to the DC Universe.
Transforming Jason Momoa into Lobo isn’t a challenge due to their striking resemblance. Momoa embodies Lobo with his colossal physique, towering height, muscular frame, unkempt hair and beard, and formidable demeanor. Additionally, Momoa mirrors Lobo’s over-the-top personality, making it effortless for him to portray the character’s sarcastic and no-nonsense attitude using his acting range. Lobo is boisterous, uncouth, and absurdly funny. This anti-hero disregards rules, a trait Momoa has showcased in previous roles such as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, Arthur Curry in Aquaman, and Baba Voss in See.
Lobo is additionally a cosmic motorcyclist, stirring up trouble wherever he travels. Similar to Momoa, he holds a deep-seated fascination with this lifestyle and showcases it in his 2024 On The Roam documentary series, as he embarks on an adventure across the U.S., discovering art, thrill, and craftsmanship while riding his bike. Momoa was destined for this role, and we can’t wait to witness him injecting excitement and chaos into the DC Universe. He is certain not to fall short of expectations, especially now that he has landed his dream part.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
