  • Fans can look forward to the return of Lucille in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2.
  • Changes to Lucille in season 2 make the weapon even deadlier and more fitting for the post-apocalyptic setting.

Among the various spinoff shows, “The Walking Dead: Dead City” stands out as one of the most captivating due to the compelling relationship between characters Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan). Recently, the show’s executive producer revealed an intriguing behind-the-scenes detail about a shared trait between Negan and actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Despite The Walking Dead concluding its run in 2022 following 11 seasons, fans didn’t have to bid farewell to intriguing characters such as Negan and Maggie for long. The spin-off series, titled The Walking Dead: Dead City, debuted on June 18th, 2023 on AMC, with its second season premiering on May 4th, 2025. This show focuses on the adventures of Negan and Maggie as they search for Hershel, Maggie’s son, in the bustling metropolis of New York City. Aside from anticipating the return of a cherished character, viewers are also eager to learn more about Morgan’s experiences during the production of this spinoff series.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Executive Producer Shared Jeffrey Dean Morgan Loves Negan’s Bat Lucille

During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, The Walking Dead: Dead City executive producer Scott M. Gimple mentioned that Jeffrey Dean Morgan often has Negan Smith’s iconic bat, Lucille, nearby while working on the set.

Jeffrey often brings Lucille with him to his trailer because he has a deep affection for her. When he’s not using her, she stays on a seat. He doesn’t return her to the prop department except at the close of each day.

In conversation, Gimple referenced a song from the classic animated film “An American Tale,” first released back in 1986, stating:

“You could see Jeffrey singing ‘Somewhere Out There’ when he didn’t have Lucille.”

Morgan adores Lucille so much, he got a tattoo of it. This prop from “The Walking Dead” carries a heavy emotional weight due to its connection with sadness. The origin of Lucille’s name is revealed in season 8, episode 14, titled “Still Gotta Mean Something,” where we learn that Negan’s late wife was named Lucille. However, Negan doesn’t destroy Lucille for good as one might expect; instead, fans catch a glimpse of it again in season 10, episode 22, “Here’s Negan.

In the second season premiere of “The Walking Dead: Dead City”, titled “Power Equals Power,” we see that Negan has regained his infamous bat, Lucille. This time, Lucille appears scarier and more dangerous than ever, as anyone who touches it receives an electric shock. Fans were excited to see the return of this iconic prop in the new season’s trailer, and it’s a welcome addition to this spinoff. It was also clever to slightly modify Lucille and make her even deadlier, given that Maggie and Negan are now in post-apocalyptic New York City, where a more formidable weapon would be fitting.

In several chats, Morgan has mentioned Lucille in them, and in a recent conversation with Variety, he revealed that he was informed a year before filming began that Lucille would feature in The Walking Dead: Dead City’s second season. He expressed his excitement about this and elaborated on the significance of Lucille to him. In an interesting twist, Morgan shared that not only does he keep Lucille in his trailer during shooting, but he also carries her when he visits craft services. Fans would find the new series less engaging without seeing Lucille, as it seems Morgan holds a soft spot for her too.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 is currently airing Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. E.T. on AMC.
