Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for You season 5.
Summary
- Jenna Ortega doesn’t appear in You season 5 due to scheduling conflicts with Wednesday season 2.
- Fans hoped she would reprise her role as Ellie, a character aware of Joe’s evil nature.
- Although Ortega couldn’t appear on camera, using social media could have integrated her story effectively.
Prior to diving into the fifth season of You, the long-awaited finale of Netflix’s gripping serial killer drama starring Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, there were a couple of elements I had wished for. One such expectation was a brief appearance by Jenna Ortega, who portrayed Ellie Alves, Joe’s L.A. neighbor in You season 2. Ortega delivers captivating performances in every project she takes on, but her portrayal of this intriguing character on the consistently shocking series was exceptional. Given the desire among fans for certain characters to reappear, Ellie was someone I desperately wanted to see return.
Since the second season of “You”, Ortega’s career has ventured along some intriguing paths. In addition to her role as Wednesday Addams on “Wednesday”, she gained recognition for her performances in horror films like “Studio 666”, “Scream 5”, and “Scream 6”. However, it remains unclear if Ortega will reprise her role as Ellie in “You” season 5.
Does Jenna Ortega Appear In You Season 5?

It’s disappointing to note that Jenna Ortega won’t be featured in ‘You’ season 5. This information comes from co-showrunner Michael Foley, who mentioned that during the filming of ‘Wednesday’ season 2 in Ireland, they were also shooting the final season of ‘You’.
In 2023, co-showrunner Sera Gamble expressed to IndieWire that the writing team had desired actress Victoria Pedretti (Ellie in You) to return for season 4. It would have been intriguing to discover Ellie’s activities during that timeframe, as mentioned by Gamble.
Our intention was to get Ellie here, but it seems Jenna is currently in a performance. It’s been wonderful watching Jenna this year. If Ellie’s schedule permits another visit, we have some ideas ready.
I Think You Season 5 Could Have Included Jenna Ortega’s Ellie Alves This Way
In a more conversational style, you might say:
Season 5 of ‘You’ starts off a bit slowly but really shines in the end. I was glad to see some familiar faces return, but I think Ellie could have made a quick cameo. There’s an impressive montage featuring past characters who all confirm that Joe Goldberg is wicked, including Paco (Luca Padovan), Sherry (Shalita Grant), and Cary Conrad (Travis Von Winkle). It would have been great if Ellie had been included in this scene, as she could have contributed to the realization about Joe’s true nature.
Even though Ortega was busy filming season 2 of Wednesday and couldn’t appear on screen, the character Ellie, who is known for her feisty personality, appears in several social media scenes throughout season 5 of You. This could have given Joe a glimpse into Ellie’s posts, where she might have revealed that she knew Joe from Los Angeles and had been tracking his criminal activities for some time. Ellie is a sharp character who doesn’t tolerate deceit easily. Initially, she is deceived by Joe, but by the end of season 2 of You, she develops a strong dislike for him. Towards the end, Joe offers Ellie money to relocate, and she informs him that she knows her sister Delilah (Carmela Zumbado) is deceased. She tells Joe he has caused nothing but trouble for her.
I was eagerly waiting for Ellie to post about her experiences living near Joe on social media. However, in the fifth season of ‘You’, it turns out that despite Joe’s attempts to start anew in New York City, his compulsion to continue murdering only intensifies. It leaves me curious about what Ellie is up to now. Is she attending college with the money Joe gave her, or does she have a job instead? I really hoped we would find out more.
Although it’s disappointing that we won’t get to watch Ortega reprise her role as Ellie in season 5 of “You”, fans can still catch the talented actress in “Wednesday” when its second season premieres on Netflix in August and September 2025.
