- New job posting suggests next God of War game in development.
- Kratos might take a backseat to Atreus.
- Santa Monica Studio may be working on a new IP alongside Ragnarok sequel.
As a die-hard God of War fan with over two decades of following this epic saga, I can barely contain my excitement as the latest news hints at not one, but possibly TWO new games from Santa Monica Studio! The prospect of Kratos stepping aside for Atreus in a potential sequel has me intrigued, and the rumors of a brand-new IP from the same studio that gave us such an immersive world is downright tantalizing.
A recent job listing for a “Senior Hero Combat Designer” knowledgeable about the combat systems in ‘God of War’ and ‘God of War: Ragnarok’ suggests that a new installment in the series may be under production.
The job posting was looking for individuals who have a deep understanding of the combat design, systems, mechanics, and enemies found in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022), implying that there may be a new project in development related to these games.
Ever since Kratos made his comeback on our consoles as a father figure in 2018, fans like me have been clamoring for more. The sequel’s record-breaking sales the moment it was released only fueled this desire. It seems that the developers are picking up on this buzz, as whispers of potential new hires have been circulating since last November.
There’s a strong suggestion that Kratos’ story may soon come to an end, yet it remains uncertain whether the upcoming installment of the series will serve as Kratos’ conclusion (epilogue) or mark the beginning of Atreus’ tale (prologue).
What’s Cooking At Santa Monica Studios?
The God of War series is the studio’s cash cow, consistently producing high-quality spin-offs, yet there seems to be more to the studio than just a sequel up its sleeve.
Since Santa Monica Studio primarily focuses on God of War series projects historically, it’s crucial for the job listing to indicate the series as a preferred qualification, rather than an absolute requirement.
Cory Barlog, the director and writer of the 2018 game ‘Ragnarök’, and its creative director, has expressed that his studio intends to explore new intellectual properties as soon as 2022. In a recent interview, he mentioned that he’s returned to SMS Entertainment with the intention of stirring up some excitement or perhaps causing a bit of disruption.
It seems improbable that Kratos is solely focusing on another God of War game, given the speculation that Barlog’s next project takes place in space. Unless we find out that Kratos has embarked on a mission to eliminate celestial deities through a new space program, it appears he might be involved in something different.
In the past two decades, SMS hasn’t launched any new project that doesn’t feature Kratos’ somber visage, except for those developed externally. This latest IP is significant for them because it breaks this long-standing trend.
Details regarding the upcoming God of War and the supposed sci-fi game are hard to come by, with just a handful of social media posts on X and LinkedIn serving as our main resources. Whatever secrets they’re holding, it’s clear they will make a significant impact in the gaming industry.
Still, a man can hope that we see Atreus in his own game, and Kratos in a space shuttle headed towards Mars.
