Arthur Mitchell, also known as ‘The Trinity Killer’, is considered one of the most formidable villains within the Dexter universe. It’s been challenging for any actor to match the legendary status of John Lithgow portraying this character, except perhaps for Dexter Morgan himself. Lithgow initially brought Mitchell to life in 2009 during the critically acclaimed fourth season of the series. However, his tenure was brief, as Dexter sought vengeance for Trinity’s murder of his wife, Rita. Following a period of contemplation while listening to soothing music on a kill table, Trinity met his end and was disposed of in the ocean. Yet, he reappeared in a flashback scene involving Harrison Morgan in the miniseries, New Blood. More recently, Lithgow has hinted at Trinity’s return in the upcoming series, Resurrection, in an interview with Variety magazine.

Yet, enthusiasts would undoubtedly delight in their favorite adversary’s return, albeit a brief appearance at the onset of the new season. John Lithgow, who initially portrayed the Trinity years ago, has seen his career flourish since then. However, it seems he’s ready to reprise his role as the killer once more, given that he’ll also be providing the voice for Arthur Mitchell in the forthcoming Trinity prequel.
The Trinity Killer’s Return Could Be Seen As Fan Service But That’s Actually Fine
Occasionally, Dexter Morgan encounters spectral appearances that could be his sister Debra or adoptive father Harry. In the series ‘Resurrection’, the Trinity Killer, who once haunted Dexter, appears again, assuming a ghostly form momentarily as the serial killer with moral guidelines awakens from apparent death. Some might view the return of John Lithgow as the notorious Trinity Killer as a nod to fans, and indeed it is, but this isn’t necessarily a negative aspect. The Trinity Killer was greatly admired by viewers, and it can be argued that subsequent villains in later seasons didn’t quite live up to John Lithgow’s captivating portrayal.
It’s possible that Resurrection is planning to introduce a new villain to follow in the footsteps of Trinity, and John Lithgow’s appearance might be setting the stage for this. Peter Dinklage portrays a character named Leon Prater in the upcoming show, who could potentially become the new antagonist. Given Dinklage’s impressive acting skills, he has the potential to rival Lithgow’s iconic villain. However, whether or not he does will depend on the strength of the storyline. The fourth season of Dexter featured a particularly strong narrative, with Trinity serving as an excellent adversary for Michael C. Hall’s character. It’s also possible that we might see Lithgow reappearing in future seasons of Resurrection, and his voice could be heard again in the Trinity prequel series.
