Summary
- Kit Harington pitched a “SNOW” spinoff for Jon Snow to HBO with George R.R. Martin’s approval.
- Despite initial excitement, HBO’s CEO announced in November 2023 that the spinoff isn’t happening.
- Harington revealed that the Jon Snow spinoff series is currently off the table due to the lack of a compelling story.
On June 16, 2022, it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that a Jon Snow spinoff, tentatively titled “SNOW,” was in the early stages of development at HBO. This news sparked enthusiasm among fans still recovering from the controversial final season of Game of Thrones. The well-known actor Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, presented the idea to HBO alongside his team of writers and showrunners. Harington’s personal involvement in SNOW lends credibility to the project, as who else could possibly embody Jon Snow better than the man who portrayed him?
Momentum grew when George R.R. Martin, the genius behind “Game of Thrones,” endorsed Kit Harington’s idea on his blog “Not A Blog.” With the departure of previous creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and Harington’s involvement along with Martin’s approval, there was optimism that the series titled “SNOW” would air. However, in November 2023, HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced that the spinoff was no longer in production. A year later at a preview event for HBO and Max’s 2025 lineup, Bloys hinted at a possible revival of the conversation about “SNOW” with “Maybe we’ll try again” (as reported by Deadline). Despite all the developments, the long-discussed Jon Snow spinoff isn’t definitively canceled and may be revisited for several reasons.
George R. R. Martin & Kit Harington On The Jon Snow Spinoff Series

As a film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but express my admiration for Kit Harington’s recent project pitch, as reported by THR on June 23, 2022. In my latest blog post, titled “Snow… and Other Stuff,” I shared my thoughts about this intriguing proposal that left me eagerly anticipating its development.
Indeed, it was Kit Harington who proposed the concept to us. Unfortunately, I’m unable to disclose the names of the writers or showrunners at this time, as that information hasn’t been made public yet… but Kit also introduced them, along with his own team, and they are simply outstanding.
Martin additionally disclosed that Harington’s group had paid him a visit in Santa Fe and collaborated with his writing staff or advisors to create the show. He acknowledged his participation in SNOW, but emphasized that the project was still in the process of being scripted and not yet finalized. In a 2024 interview for the promotion of Blood for Dust with Screen Rant, when asked about the status of the Jon Snow spinoff series, Harington stated: Is the series still in development? His response was affirmative.
I hadn’t discussed it much as it was still under construction, to avoid premature disclosure and prevent unnecessary speculation. I wanted to assess its feasibility thoroughly before people started forming opinions, either positive or negative, about something that might not even come to fruition. During development, one examines all possibilities to determine if it’s worth pursuing.
At present, we’ve put it aside since we haven’t discovered a compelling narrative that excites us all. Consequently, we’ve temporarily suspended work on it. However, there might be a time in the future when we pick it up again, but for now, it’s off-limits or shelved.
A Sequel Rather Than A Prequel: A Jon Snow Spinoff Has Massive Potential
Primarily, the spin-off series has promise due to the unresolved storyline of Jon Snow following the finale of Game of Thrones. In the final episode, Jon was portrayed as a messiah who saved Westeros by slaying Daenerys Targaryen, the Mad Queen. The Northern threat had been neutralized when he managed to form an alliance with Daenerys in Season 7 (of Game of Thrones). It was Jon who understood and warned about the danger posed by the Dead and the Night King, which lay beyond the Wall. He mobilized the entire North, even uniting the disadvantaged Free Folk, to battle the war against the Others.
Daenerys’ brutal conquest of King’s Landing while riding her dragon, Drogon, ultimately led Jon to stab her. This decisive talk between them sealed not only their political alliance but also their friendship. Tyrion Lannister, her former advisor, made it clear that as long as Daenerys reigned, Arya and Sansa Stark would remain in danger. Their final conversation confirmed the end of any peaceful solutions with Daenerys, who seemed destined to become a tyrant across Westeros. Jon was imprisoned until a Grand Council at the Dragonpit condemned him to return to the Night’s Watch. There, he would relinquish all land and women, dedicating his life solely to training outcasts and criminals at Castle Black.
Jon’s incomplete tale opens up numerous avenues for a spin-off series titled “SNOW“. The conclusion of Game of Thrones paves the way for this show, focusing on the enigmatic Dead and the Night King. By circumventing the contentious final season, the narrative can progress with Jon’s direwolf, Ghost; his cherished friend, Tormund Giantsbane; and the surviving Free Folk. As demonstrated at the end of Game of Thrones, Jon was eager to embark on a life beyond the Wall. Abandoning the crumbling Castle Black, he ventured into the Haunted Forest, embracing his dream of becoming a Ranger.
The Jon Snow spin-off could delve into the narrative of the White Walkers, or it might unfold as a heartfelt saga of love, loss, and atonement. Instead of centering on the grand conflicts and political turmoil of Westeros, this series should primarily focus on Jon’s personal journey, inner battles, and redemption, deepening the exploration of the theme of love against duty. Essentially, the Jon Snow spin-off serves as HBO’s passage into the post-“Game of Thrones” era. It offers a chance to reunite his cherished companions and interweave each narrative with ancient lore and the enigma of the true North.
Jon Snow’s internal struggles remain unexplored and unresolved, leaving many fans yearning for a satisfying resolution to his storyline. With The Winds of Winter still undecided, a potential spinoff focusing on Jon Snow could keep fans hooked and maintain their emotional investment in the series.
