In this world, a person’s strength and ability to survive usually depend on the amount of Cursed Energy they’re born with. However, the creator, Gege Akutami, introduced a unique exception to this system – a rare ability called a Heavenly Restriction. This power doesn’t follow the normal rules of magic, but comes at a significant and unwanted cost.

A Binding Vow Placed On The Body At Birth
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, a Binding Vow is usually something a sorcerer willingly does to gain more power. They give up a certain freedom to become stronger. A Heavenly Restriction is a special type of Binding Vow that’s given at birth. It’s a fundamental limitation – the universe takes away something essential, like a physical ability or part of their spirit, and in return, grants an incredibly powerful, unique gift. This isn’t earned through effort; it’s a preordained destiny that allows individuals to surpass the normal limits of jujutsu.
Zero Cursed Energy For Absolute Power
The Man Who Broke Free From The Chains Of Fate
The most famous – and dreaded – type of Heavenly Restriction involves completely losing Cursed Energy in exchange for incredible physical abilities. Toji Fushiguro was the first known case of this extreme trade-off. Because his Cursed Energy was zero, Toji became a kind of superhuman with senses so sharp he could detect Curses without relying on any other abilities. He possessed unmatched strength, speed, and a natural resistance to curses.
Toji’s biggest advantage was his ability to go unnoticed. Because he didn’t possess any cursed energy, he was essentially invisible to the jujutsu world – barriers couldn’t detect him, and most sorcerers couldn’t sense him, with Satoru Gojo being the notable exception. He was uniquely free from the destiny that bound all other sorcerers. However, this freedom came at a cost. The Zen’in Clan considered him a disgrace, which fueled the deep resentment that defined his life and ultimately led him to become the Sorcerer Killer.
Zenin Clan’s Greatest Fear: Maki’s True Awakening
The Twin Soul Paradox
Early in the series, Maki Zenin had a limited ability to use cursed energy due to a unique situation. Because she was a twin, jujutsu logic dictated that she and her sister, Mai, were considered one. Mai possessed a small amount of cursed energy, and this is what prevented Maki from reaching the same powerful level as Toji. Maki’s cursed energy was effectively zero until Mai tragically sacrificed herself, unlocking Maki’s full potential. Mai, however, was also limited by being a twin. Some fans speculate what would have happened if Maki had been the one sacrificed instead – Mai would have received an immense amount of cursed energy, potentially allowing her to materialize anything she imagined.
Mai’s ultimate sacrifice unlocked her full potential, making her as strong as Toji, and some fans even believe she’s surpassed him, though the author hasn’t confirmed this. Regardless, Maki demonstrated incredible power by surviving a direct hit from Sukuna’s Black Flash – a feat few could endure. Like Toji, her weakness is a complete reliance on cursed tools, as she lacks cursed energy herself. However, she proved that even a ‘failed’ sorcerer could single-handedly destroy an entire clan of powerful, elite magic users.
The Master of the Ultimate Puppet: Mechamaru
Vast Cursed Energy Output Paid For By A Fragile Body
Okay, so Mechamaru, whose real name is Kokichi Muta, is totally the opposite of Toji. Where Toji was all physical power, Mechamaru was born incredibly weak – he didn’t even have limbs and his skin was so sensitive, even moonlight hurt! But get this – his cursed energy? Absolutely massive. Like, unbelievably powerful and with a crazy long range. It’s a really bizarre contrast!

Kokichi could extend his unique abilities – controlling puppets and using a special technique – across all of Japan. He secretly built and operated numerous mechanical bodies from a hidden underground base. This setup allowed him to accumulate a massive amount of energy over the years, which he eventually used to power a colossal mechanical suit, Ultimate Mechamaru, capable of battling incredibly powerful sorcerers. While this made him nearly unbeatable, his frail body was a significant weakness. He spent his entire life immersed in chemicals, isolated and longing for the companionship he could never truly experience.
