Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Akutami Confirms A New Special Grade Level Sorcerer

This article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.

Watching Jujutsu Kaisen, it quickly becomes clear that sorcerers come in all levels of power. The series establishes a ranking system – starting with Grade 4 as the weakest, and going up to Grade 1. There are also ‘Semi-Grades’ in between, representing power levels that fall between the main grades. While Grade 1 sorcerers are considered incredibly strong, there’s a separate category for those who stand above even them: Special Grade. These sorcerers are so powerful, and so unusual, that they don’t even really fit into the normal ranking system.

In Jujutsu Kaisen, only four sorcerers are officially classified as Special Grade: Gojo, Yuta, Yuki, and Geto. However, several other characters have the potential to reach this level. The most recent addition is Tsurugi, but his power depends on a unique situation. When Rika possesses his body, Tsurugi becomes a Special Grade, as Rika is a Special Grade curse herself. Without Rika, Tsurugi’s abilities would likely only reach Grade 1, unless he fully unlocks his innate potential.

Gojo, Yuta, Yuki, and Geto Are Official Special Grades

  • Sukuna, Kenjaku, Yuji, Yuka, And Some Others Can Be Unofficial Special Grades

In Jujutsu Kaisen, the most powerful characters aren’t necessarily the Grade 1 sorcerers. Although Grade 1 is a high ranking, there’s an even rarer and more powerful class: Special Grade. Sorcerers like Nanami and Mei Mei are strong, but the truly strongest characters in the series are those classified as Special Grade.

As a Jujutsu Kaisen fan, I’m totally fascinated by the Special Grades – they represent the absolute peak of power in the series! Right now, we only officially know of four, and Gojo Satoru is hands-down the strongest. Seriously, he’s unbelievably powerful – almost untouchable! His abilities, like Six Eyes and Limitless, are insane, and he nearly took down Sukuna, which just proves how ridiculously strong he is.

Yuta Okkotsu is a very powerful sorcerer, classified as Special Grade. Though he isn’t quite as strong as Gojo, he’s exceptionally gifted. His cursed technique, called Copy, is remarkably adaptable, and he has a huge reserve of cursed energy, largely due to his connection with Rika.

Yuki Tsukumo is officially recognized as a Special Grade sorcerer. Her cursed technique gives her control over mass, and at its peak, she potentially possesses the power to destroy the world.

Okay, so Geto Suguru was officially confirmed as the final Special Grade Jujutsu Sorcerer, and honestly, it makes total sense! His ability to manipulate cursed spirits is just… insane. He can absorb them and then control them, which is already a ridiculously strong technique, but the way he uses it is just completely broken. It’s seriously overpowered!

Although only four sorcerers are officially classified as Special Grade, several others could potentially qualify. Sukuna is a prime example, as he was an incredibly powerful sorcerer—arguably the strongest. His ability to defeat and kill Gojo Satoru, as demonstrated in the Shinjuku incident, proves just how formidable he was, making him the most challenging villain they faced.

In addition to Sukuna, characters like Yuji Itadori and Kenjaku are considered extremely powerful, classified as Special Grades. Future characters introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen could also reach this level of power. Dabura poses a threat comparable to Sukuna, and is undoubtedly a Special Grade.

Maru and Cross might also reach a similar power level if they continue to improve their skills. Yuka Okkotsu, if she fully develops her abilities, has the potential to become a Special Grade sorcerer, possessing both a large amount of cursed energy and the Ten Shadow Technique, much like Yuta. Recently, the author, Gege Akutami, introduced a new character named Tsurugi Okkotsu from Modulo who could also be that powerful.

Tsurugi Could Be Considered Special Grade with the Powers of Rika

  • Without Rika, Tsurugi Needs More Power

The new series, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, features a fresh group of characters, including the siblings Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu. Although related, they have very different fighting strengths: Yuka possesses a large amount of cursed energy naturally, while Tsurugi has only a small amount. This dynamic is similar to that of their grandparents, Yuta and Maki.

Currently, Yuka appears to be the more powerful of the two siblings. Despite being gravely ill with a fatal brain tumor, she was chosen to battle Dabura. While Yuka is significantly more damaged than Tsurugi, the author has evened the playing field by temporarily granting Tsurugi some of Rika’s abilities.

I watched as the fight between Tsurugi and Maru unfolded, and it was incredible to see Rika step in to help. Tsurugi was really struggling, but with Rika’s power added to his own, he became something else – far beyond a typical Grade 1 Sorcerer. He quickly turned the tables on Maru, even countering Maru’s Chaos and Order technique with ease. It was clear to me then that with Rika by his side, Tsurugi absolutely has the potential to be ranked as a Special Grade sorcerer.

Tsurugi Could Become Special Grade on His Own If He Loses His Cursed Energy

Currently, Tsurugi is incredibly strong thanks to the power Rika lends him, putting him at a Special Grade level. But without Rika’s abilities, he’s significantly weaker, likely only a Grade 1 Sorcerer. While Tsurugi initially protected Rika, it’s been clear from the beginning that she’s destined to be with Yuka Okkotsu, as Yuta entrusted the ring to her. It’s only a matter of time before Tsurugi gives Rika back to Yuka.

If Rika isn’t around, Tsurugi will lose the source of his greatest strength. He can only reach his full potential and become a truly powerful sorcerer by unlocking his natural abilities and getting rid of the remaining cursed energy inside him.

It’s uncertain if similar circumstances could occur again. Toji appears to have been a unique case, born without any cursed energy. As for Tsurugi, his grandmother, Maki, was a twin. Being a twin is significant in the Jujutsu Kaisen world, and Maki was able to unlock her full potential – her Heavenly Restriction – when her twin sister passed away and transferred what little cursed energy she had left to her.

Tsurugi’s situation is unique; unlike some other characters, he wasn’t born without cursed energy and isn’t a twin. The author, Gege, might introduce a new path for Tsurugi to reach his full potential with Heavenly Restriction, but it’s currently unknown how that will happen. While it’s possible Tsurugi will remain at his current strength by the end of the Modulo arc, most fans believe he’ll become more powerful.

By the end of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Tsurugi is expected to become incredibly powerful. He’ll need to surpass his previous strength from when he fought alongside Rika, implying his unique abilities will likely make him as strong as a top-tier, Special Grade sorcerer after his battle with Maru.

The next chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, chapter 20, will be available on February 1, 2026. It will be released at midnight in Japan (11:00 AM Eastern Time, 8:00 AM Pacific Time). You can read it for free on Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump app.
