Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Akutami Kills Off Two Major JJK Characters In The Sequel

This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sequel, JJK 3 Modulo.

2025 became an exceptionally exciting year for fans of the acclaimed series “Jujutsu Kaisen,” with the announcement of a continuation to the main story being the absolute highlight. Following the conclusion of the “JJK” manga in 2024, enthusiasts had been patiently waiting for creator Gege to share more content, fueled by the belief that there was still much untapped potential in the world of “JJK,” and also due to their longing for the series. For some time, the future of “JJK” remained uncertain; however, the picture brightened significantly as Gege Akutami’s forthcoming manga endeavors were disclosed.

In August 2025, it was confirmed that Gege Akutami would begin a new manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #41. Excitingly, this upcoming manga has been revealed to be a sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, taking place many years after the original story’s conclusion. While fans are eager about the return of Jujutsu Kaisen, they also face some sad news: The author announced that two significant characters, Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, will be killed off in the new series.

Gege Akutami Officially Kills Off Yuta Okkotsu And Maki Zenin

  • Maki Zenin died first
  • Yuta Okkotsu died shortly after

In a special issue of Jujutsu Kaisen released towards the end of 2024, readers found themselves propelled years into the future. It turned out that by this time, Yuta Okkotsu had risen to become the head of the Gojo Clan and had two grandchildren who bore a striking resemblance to Maki, leading fans to speculate they were married. In Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, author Gege Akutami officially confirmed that Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin did indeed get married and eventually had children and grandchildren. Unfortunately for those hoping to see these characters in the story, both Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin are no longer alive.

Maki, erase everything! — Mai Zenin

In the continuation of JJK manga, it’s stated in the initial chapter that Maki Zenin passed away before Kokoa, and the cause of her death remains a mystery. Her demise was deeply distressing for Yuta Okkotsu, causing him to gradually weaken. Upon Maki’s passing, Yuta’s health began to deteriorate, possibly due to grief. As revealed by Yuuki Okkotsu, Yuta also perished shortly thereafter.

The Old Generations’ Characters Could’ve Died

The Series Is Set Over 6 Decades After Shinjuku Showdown

In the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, neither Yuta nor Maki will take on major roles, a fact that has been made clear. Instead, the two main characters are Yuuki and Tsugiri Okkotsu. With Yuta and Maki out of the picture, some fans may wonder if any original sorcerers from the previous generation are still alive. Unfortunately, it’s not certain, but it seems likely that most of them have already passed away.

It’s the power of love. — Yuta Okkotsu

The reason for this is that the sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen is projected to take place at least 68 years down the line, with possible additional time skips. This suggests that many of the characters would have advanced in age, reaching their 80s and 90s. However, not everyone lives this long, so it’s quite probable that several Jujutsu Kaisen characters have passed away by the events of JJK 3 Modulo. Notable examples might be Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki. Yet, Yuji Itadori could still be alive, given that he was under Sukuna’s possession for a considerable period.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo will be out this week, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #41.
