As a long-time fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I must say that the character arc of Megumi Fushiguro has been one of the most disappointing aspects of this otherwise brilliant series. Having followed Megumi’s journey since the very beginning, it’s heartbreaking to see his potential go unfulfilled and his role in the story diminished over time.
This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Showdown Arc.
Megumi Fushiguro is a significant character within the storyline of “Jujutsu Kaisen”. Together with Gojo, Nobara, and Yuji, he forms the primary group steering the plot. Given his substantial role, it’s no surprise that many fans find him appealing. In fact, Megumi is renowned as one of the most beloved characters in “Jujutsu Kaisen”, often topping popularity polls within the franchise.
A significant portion of Megumi’s appeal lies in his captivating portrayal within the narrative, surpassing even the main character, Yuji Itadori, in intrigue until a certain juncture. However, the author’s management of this character, particularly towards the latter stages of the series, could have been improved, and it fell short of fan expectations, especially as the conclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen drew near. By the end, Megumi’s character development largely disappointed fans.
Megumi’s Incredible Potential Set Up Some Very Intriguing Plot Points
- Megumi Had The Potential To Rival Gojo
- Megumi’s Skill Was Acknowledged By Sukuna
Megumi Fushiguro is widely recognized as one of the strongest upcoming Jujutsu sorcerers, a fact that doesn’t shock followers of the series since he was Satoru Gojo’s apprentice. It’s also worth noting that Yūji Itadori eventually became incredibly powerful, and his strength was apparent from early on in the story. In a similar vein, it was made clear that Megumi would be on par with Yūji, while still standing out among other characters. To add to this, it was later discovered that Megumi is an important member of the Zenin family and possesses the 10 Shadows Technique, a formidable ability inherited by him. Over the course of the series, fans have witnessed him continually improving his mastery over this powerful technique.
Learn to be more selfish, Megumi! – Gojo
Despite initially showing selflessness, Megumi’s character evolved into becoming more self-centered as he strove to increase his strength. This transformation, particularly evident in the early stages of Jujutsu Kaisen, was well-received by fans. Simultaneously, fans were aware that Megumi’s ambition to grow stronger and more selfish would eventually unlock new abilities for him, such as a Domain Expansion. It was clear that Megumi was destined for great power, and fans anticipated his promising future, as foretold by the author. Even Gojo, the strongest modern sorcerer, recognized Megumi’s potential to one day match his strength.
He drew this comparison by stating that once, a former user of the Six Eyes and the Limitless was evenly matched in battle by a user of the 10 Shadows Technique, and that just goes to show what level Megumi could hit in the future.
Megumi’s Growth And Fall In JJK
Megumi’s Growth Was Stunted As Sukuna Took Over
Megumi Fushiguro clearly demonstrated progress throughout Jujutsu Kaisen. Initially, his advancement was relatively gradual, but when he observed Yuji’s extraordinary abilities and rapid development, he understood that he needed to keep pace. As a result, Megumi put in immense effort and eventually attained a high degree of power, even manifesting a domain expansion. He successfully confronted the finger bearer, and during the Culling Game, he proved his true potential by battling numerous powerful Ancient Sorcerers and matching them, delighting many fans in the process.
Readers have consistently held lofty hopes for Megumi Fushiguro, but unfortunately, these aspirations were unmet in the conclusion, as Megumi did not receive the narrative resolution that readers had anticipated for him in the final act of the story.
Just let it end already. – Megumi
Essentially, Sukuna overpowered Megumi Fushiguro, aiming to be reborn and disrupt society. Indeed, Sukuna managed to dominate Megumi’s body, resulting in the destruction of what Megumi cherished most. In the process, his sister was killed, and Yuji Itadori, his closest friend, found himself distressed. Moreover, Megumi ended up killing his teacher, Gojo, which was undoubtedly painful for him.
Megumi appeared to have lost all desire to live. He turned down help when offered, indicating a strong desire to end his life. The glimmer of hope fans held for this character was effectively extinguished by the author, and for nearly two years in the narrative, Megumi’s character development seemed nonexistent.
Megumi’s Unfulfilled Role In Jujutsu Kaisen And The Downfall Of The Character
Megumi Was Cast Aside And Cut Out Of the Story
After the Shinjuku showdown Arc concluded, Megumi Fushiguro was spoken to by Yuji once more. When Yuji activated his domain, he was able to reach Megumi, and upon doing so, he touched his soul. This action essentially revived Megumi’s hope, prompting him to fight back against the King of Curses. Megumi allowed Yuji to unleash a powerful attack, and in response, Nobara entered the fray as well. The trio then worked together to set up the ideal situation for Sukuna’s downfall, ultimately leading to the death of the King of Curses.
After Sukuna’s fall, Megumi found newfound freedom. Unfortunately, Megumi’s character development took a turn for the worse in the hands of the author. He didn’t reach his full potential and his cursed technique, as well as other aspects of his character, were left unfinished. Megumi struggles to master his technique effectively, which is disappointing considering Sukuna, who resided within him, was more proficient with his own abilities. Additionally, Megumi’s domain expansion, Chimera Shadow Garden, has remained stagnant since its initial introduction in the story, and all the promise it held for him to become a powerful sorcerer went unused.
Despite Megumi’s survival during the Shinjuku Showdown and his subsequent development into a powerful sorcerer, readers missed witnessing his growth journey due to the author’s decision. Additionally, Megumi’s significance in the narrative significantly decreased, as he primarily served as a character for Yuji to rescue. Beyond this purpose, Megumi’s contributions in the final arc of the series were minimal, and his role was notably reduced.
As we approach the final chapters of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” it’s clear that the story is wrapping up within the next three weeks or so. Unfortunately, it seems that several characters in the series have not achieved their desires or lived up to fan expectations, which is a real pity.
