Jujutsu Kaisen: How Yuji Itadori Surpassed Sukuna, Explained

This article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.

Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, and Gojo Satoru are widely considered the most powerful characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. Both sorcerers demonstrated incredible skill, far surpassing normal human abilities. While Sukuna initially won a battle between the two, he was ultimately defeated by Yuji Itadori, the person he possessed.

During the battle against Sukuna, Yuji Itadori discovered hidden abilities, and he’s become significantly more powerful since then. In the current storyline of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Yuji has clearly exceeded Sukuna’s strength. Now, 69 years in the future, Yuji has even learned to use Sukuna’s techniques himself, solidifying his place as the new strongest sorcerer. While Yuji has only hinted at his full power so far, he’ll soon have the chance to demonstrate it fully in an upcoming fight against Dabura in JJK Modulo.

Ryomen Sukuna Was At Peak of Jujutsu Sorcery

  • Sukuna Absorbed his Twin Brother and Acquired Gigantic Cursed Energy Reserves
  • Sukuna Was Born with the Perfect Body for Jujutsu Sorcery
  • Sukuna’s Shrine Was an Overpowered Cursed Technique

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Sukuna earned the title of King of Curses, and rightfully so. He was arguably the most powerful sorcerer of his time. A significant part of his strength comes from the unusual circumstances of his birth. Sukuna has the largest amount of Cursed Energy in the entire series, surpassing even characters like Yuta Okkotsu and Gojo Satoru. This is because he absorbed his twin brother while still in the womb, effectively doubling his cursed energy capacity.

Sukuna, let’s end this once and for all. I can defeat you. — Yuji Itadori, Shinjuku Showdown

Sukuna was uniquely suited for Jujutsu sorcery, possessing a naturally powerful physique. He was born with two mouths and four arms, which allowed him to perform incantations and hand signs with unmatched skill. Even a simple doodle of Sukuna, based on Maru’s imagination and created by Gege Akutami for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, depicts him as a truly terrifying figure.

Beyond his other abilities, Sukuna possesses an incredibly strong Cursed Technique in Jujutsu Kaisen. Known as Shrine, this technique lets him slice through almost anything using attacks like Cleave and Dismantle. He can create devastating slashes and unleash massive flames on his opponents. In general, Sukuna’s technique is exceptionally powerful, and his domain expansion takes it to another level.

For a long time, Gojo Satoru was considered the only character comparable to Sukuna in terms of power. Although their strengths are open to interpretation, Sukuna ultimately won when they fought. However, during that same battle, another sorcerer managed to defeat Sukuna – surprisingly, it was Sukuna’s own vessel, Yuji Itadori.

The battle with Sukuna in Shinjuku allowed Yuji to finally tap into his hidden abilities as Sukuna’s vessel. He surprisingly managed to turn Sukuna’s own techniques against him, specifically the Shrine technique, but with a unique variation. Instead of just slashing, Yuji now attacks like a pair of scissors. He even combined this new ability with his soul-hitting power, creating a devastating attack called Soul Dismantle. Ultimately, it was this soul-cutting attack, followed by a Black Flash, that defeated Sukuna.

I knew this was going to happen, even though I hadn’t actually said it. — Yuji Itadori, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 19

The fight with Sukuna was a major turning point for Yuji, but he’s become even more powerful in the current timeline, after 68 years. His performance in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapter 20 suggests he’s currently stronger than Sukuna was.

For a long time in Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji Itadori felt like a fairly ordinary character, especially compared to powerful figures like Gojo and Sukuna. However, everything changed after his intense fight with Sukuna. Now, 68 years later, Yuji has become incredibly powerful and fearsome.

Readers curious about Yuji’s progress after his fight with Sukuna in JJK Modulo got their answer in chapters 19 and 20. Yuji Itadori returned in Chapter 19, immediately demonstrating his mastery of Blood Manipulation. He’s become incredibly powerful, now considered the greatest Blood Manipulation user ever, able to use Piercing Blood techniques with unmatched skill.

Yuji continued to demonstrate his abilities in Chapter 20 of JJK Modulo. He successfully used Black Flash, a technique he’s become incredibly proficient with. While Black Flashes are normally triggered randomly, Yuji has learned to control them. He showed great skill with Black Flash during his fight with Sukuna, but he’s now perfected the technique in this alternate timeline.

Yuji Itadori is a thing of the past. He doesn’t matter anymore. — Yuji, JJK Modulo Chapter 20

Yuji impressively replicated Sukuna’s signature move, Dismantle, but with significantly increased power. His single Dismantle attack proved to be as strong as both Hollow Purple and Divine Flame combined. This achievement demonstrates that Yuji has now exceeded Sukuna’s capabilities in Modulo.

Despite everything we’ve seen, Yuji’s full potential hasn’t been revealed yet. To truly demonstrate his strength, he’ll need to fight Dabura with everything he’s got. Many believe Dabura is an even more dangerous opponent than those Yuji faced before. This upcoming fight between Yuji and Dabura is shaping up to be an epic clash, and fans are eagerly anticipating it. Dabura’s attacks, which combine light and darkness, along with his deadly Murderous Intent Technique, will be incredibly difficult to overcome.

Yuji Itadori is humanity’s final chance, and he’ll need to master his abilities – including Blood Manipulation, Black Flash, and Shrine, and potentially a new, powerful Domain Expansion – to survive. A clash of Domain Expansions, similar to the fight between Gojo and Sukuna, might happen if Dabura figures out how to use his own. This battle could be where Yuji finally accepts his desire to die surrounded by those he cares about – a realization he hasn’t come to terms with yet, and it may ultimately be his last.
