The recent season of Jujutsu Kaisen brought back the Split Soul Katana, a weapon we first saw in season two. What gives this cursed tool its incredible power? And could it be the reason behind Maki’s increased abilities?
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, Cursed Tools are incredibly strong weapons. They’re filled with cursed energy, which lets people fight cursed spirits even without any cursed energy of their own. One particular tool, the Split Soul Katana, has been important to the story – but just how much impact has it really had?
What is The Split Soul Katana?

I recently learned about a really interesting cursed tool called the Split Soul Katana. Apparently, both Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin have wielded it. What makes it so dangerous is that it doesn’t just cut through bodies – it can directly damage someone’s soul, bypassing any normal defenses. I first saw it in action during Season 2, Episode 3 of the anime, when Toji used it against Geto and Gojo. It was a pretty intense scene!
Toji famously sliced through the Rainbow Dragon, a powerful curse used by Geto. After Toji died, the katana’s location remained unknown, though it was likely kept with the Zenin Clan’s collection of weapons.
Maki’s Katana is Not the Same as Toji’s
In Season 3, Episode 4, Maki goes to the Zenin Clan’s hidden weapon storage, only to find her father there. He reveals he’s already taken everything, including the original Split Soul Katana she was seeking. After attacking Maki and Mai, he leaves them for dead. Understanding their dire situation, Mai uses her cursed technique to create a fake version of the katana, sacrificing her own life in the process.
Maki decisively defeats the Zenin Clan, wielding both the Split Soul Katana and Juzo Kumiya’s powerful “Dragon Bone.” With a single blow, she defeats her father and completely overpowers the entire Kukuru Unit.
Is the Split Soul Katana responsible for Maki’s newfound strength?
While the Split Soul Katana definitely made Maki a better fighter, it wasn’t the only thing that increased her power. After Mai died, the cursed energy they shared disappeared, which allowed Maki’s already strong body to become even more powerful – reaching a level comparable to Toji’s.
The following section contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga
What Will Happen to the Split Soul Katana?
Maki plans to keep using her katana during the Culling Game, specifically when facing Naoya’s cursed spirit at the Sakurajima Colony. At first, she has trouble landing a significant blow because she can’t fully utilize the katana’s power. Luckily, Hagane Daido arrives, having been actively searching for a katana. He quickly takes hold of the Split Soul Katana and, with his impressive skill, manages to cut Naoya.
After training with Rokujushi Miyo, Maki masters the katana and is able to defeat Naoya without difficulty. The sword also serves as a last connection between Maki and Mai, making it a deeply meaningful item throughout the story.
The Split Soul Katana is a memorable weapon from the anime, even though it doesn’t appear much. Fans love it because of its connection to the important characters Toji and Maki.
The latest season of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
