Even though it’s a short continuation of the Jujutsu Kaisen story, the Modulo sequel has quickly delivered exciting action, with some fights potentially matching the best moments from the original series. A prime example is the long-anticipated battle between Yuka Okkotsu and Dabura Karaba, the leader of the Simurians.
While everyone’s attention is on the main fight, another critical and dangerous battle is unfolding between Maru and Tsurugi Okkotsu. This fight, which didn’t seem as important at first, has become incredibly intense in Chapter 17 of the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga with the reappearance of Rika, a powerful cursed spirit.
Why Are These Battles Even Happening In The First Place?

When Modulo dropped the bombshell about aliens using Cursed Energy, I was immediately buzzing with excitement! It felt like the story could go anywhere. But honestly, almost every cool idea I had seemed to lead back to one thing: a huge showdown between humanity and the Simurians for control of Earth. It’s shaping up to be an epic fight for our planet!
The alien’s history was gradually revealed: they belonged to the Lumelian clan, who were exiled from their home planet. This happened because they deeply revered the Kaliyan species, a move that angered their neighbors, the Deskunte tribe, after centuries of peaceful coexistence. Left with nowhere to go, the Lumelians wandered through space searching for a new home.
At first, the idea of humans and Simurians living together seemed challenging, but both groups believed they could make it work by cooperating and sharing their cultures. Unfortunately, this peaceful arrangement didn’t last. A serious misunderstanding about how the Kaliyans were being treated on Earth led to a dangerous situation – Maru’s brother, Cross, was almost fatally shot.
Things really came to a head, and it all boiled down to a showdown! With Yuji out of the picture, we saw Yuka, humanity’s strongest sorcerer, step up to face Dabura, the most powerful Simurian. And it wasn’t just that main fight, either – Tsurugi and Maru were also on a collision course, and honestly, their battle quickly escalated into something way bigger than anyone could have predicted!
Rika Makes A Long-Awaited Appearance To Help Tsurugi Defeat Maru
The Queen of Curses

Even before the war between humans and the Simurians truly started, Modulo predicted the core issue between Yuka and Tsurugi: who would inherit Yuta’s ring. Though Yuta’s grandfather had promised it to Yuka, the Gojo clan ultimately decided the eldest child should receive the ring, a powerful artifact capable of summoning a tremendously strong being.
Tsurugi surprisingly did well in his first fight with Maru because of a unique ability that gave him incredible strength, but took away all of his cursed energy. This ability seems to run in his family—both Maki and Toji from the Zenin Clan were born with the same trait.
Once Maru starts taking the fight seriously, he unleashes a frightening Cursed Technique that warps reality and grants him immense telekinetic abilities. This overwhelming power proves too much for Tsurugi, despite his Heavenly Restriction and strong Cursed Tool. Maru nearly kills Tsurugi by throwing him into a building and then burying him under a pile of cars.
Badly injured, Rika reaches Tsurugi, who is wearing the ring. She offers her assistance, and when he accepts, something unprecedented happens: the Queen of Curses merges with Tsurugi, transferring her powers to him and taking control of his body.
Just say ‘I accept’.
It’s amazing to watch, as fans might be getting a glimpse of one of the most formidable characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. Because of Tsurugi’s unique abilities and Rika being an incredibly powerful spirit with vast cursed energy, we’re seeing a character who can wield these opposing forces at the same time.
Honestly, I’m blown away by Rika! Giving up Cursed Energy usually means incredible physical strength, but she somehow kept her Cursed Energy while also getting what looks like the strongest body we’ve seen in the whole series. That puts her right up there with Sukuna and Gojo in terms of power! It’s so exciting, and it actually feels like humanity has a real shot against those incredibly powerful Simurians. I’m on the edge of my seat to see what happens next!
