With Chapter 17 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo coming soon, let’s remember a chilling moment from the original Jujutsu Kaisen series. Mahito, the cruel cursed spirit who killed Nanami Kento and Kokichi Muta, surprisingly appeared in a dream experienced by Tsurugi Okkotsu in Chapter 7 of JJK Modulo.

Given Gege Akutami’s storytelling style, there’s a specific reason Mahito has returned in the sequel. Although that reason isn’t obvious yet, his reappearance – 62 years after the original Jujutsu Kaisen story – has fans theorizing about how he was revived. It’s likely his lingering resentment towards Yuji Itadori is motivating him to influence things happening now, even from afar.

Mahito Is Still Waiting for Yuji Itadori’s Death

Mahito is a truly memorable villain in Jujutsu Kaisen, known for his cruelty and willingness to manipulate people’s souls. He deeply impacted fans, particularly during the Shibuya Incident, with his brutal actions against Nanami Kento. He also tormented Yuji Itadori by repeatedly harming and killing those Yuji cared about.

In the season finale of Jujutsu Kaisen, Mahito was surprisingly killed by Kenjaku, who absorbed him. However, he reappeared later in the manga, encountering Ryomen Sukuna in a sort of afterlife realm. While Sukuna wanted to move on after being defeated, Mahito is stuck because he still has unresolved issues with Yuji Itadori.

More than six decades after his defeat, Mahito reappeared in a dream within the Jujutsu Kaisen world, specifically in Yuji Itadori’s companion, Yuta Okkotsu’s, dream. This suggests he might still be waiting for Yuji to die, and that Mahito’s existence continues somehow, even beyond the normal world. It’s a worrying sign, especially considering that curses like Mahito often take a century to return, and it’s possible he’s already found a way to come back to life despite previous assumptions.

Yuji Itadori is currently missing in Tokyo, but reports confirm he’s alive and safe. Nobara says he disappeared because he was emotionally exhausted from constantly attending funerals for people he knew. Despite a recent challenge from Dabura that impacts Tokyo’s fate, Yuji still hasn’t reappeared.

A great way to push Yuji out of his current withdrawn state would be to reintroduce Mahito as an enemy. They have unresolved conflicts – Yuji didn’t finish Mahito, and Mahito didn’t finish Yuji.
