Many fans already consider Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 to be one of the best anime of 2026. Following the intense events in Shibuya, the anime took a two-year break before returning with the start of the Culling Game arc. Season 3 will be released in two parts: the first part has 12 episodes, and the second part will air later in 2026, bringing the Culling Game arc to a thrilling conclusion.
Season 3 Part 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen is nearing its conclusion, having already covered more than half of its story. The season is building towards a thrilling climax that promises to be among the best moments the series has ever offered. However, there’s concern that Season 3 Part 2 might not be as strong, as rumors suggest the departure of the director and storyboard artist who have been key to the show’s quality.
Shouta Ghosozono Is Rumored To Leave Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3
Great anime comes from strong creative leadership and a skilled production team. Jujutsu Kaisen immediately stood out as a high-quality adaptation, initially directed by Sunghoo Park in Season 1. However, Season 2, with Shota Goshozono as director, took the series to another level. The art, storyboarding, and overall visual style were noticeably improved, making Season 2 a step above even the excellent first season.
Shota Goshozono is widely considered one of the most gifted directors working in Japanese anime today, with many fans calling him the best director and storyboard artist in the industry. His involvement with both seasons of Jujutsu Kaisen has been a huge treat for viewers. While the show has greatly benefited from his talent, recent developments suggest things may be changing behind the scenes.
Shota Goshozono has been the lead director for the first part of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, personally handling the storyboarding and directing most of the episodes. However, it’s now been reported that Goshozono may leave the series entirely after this first part of the Culling Game is finished.
It’s currently unclear why Shota Goshozono is leaving his role, but reports suggest he’s choosing to step down. He successfully directed the first part of the Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Culling Game arc, and his creative vision brought some of the series’ most memorable moments to life. The animation of the Zenin clan massacre, in particular, was exceptional. Goshozono took a fantastic manga chapter and made it even more impactful, creating what’s likely to be considered one of the best animated episodes of 2026.
Ghosozono Storyboarded Part 1 Of The Series Himself
When the first part of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 started, fans noticed that Shota Goshozono directed almost every episode. It was also revealed he single-handedly created the storyboards for the entire part – a very unusual situation, as episodes typically have different directors and storyboard artists. Now that news has surfaced about Shota Goshozono leaving MAPPA, it all clicks into place. It seems this was his final contribution to Jujutsu Kaisen, and perhaps to anime in general. Reports suggest he’s moving to France to join Illumination Studios Paris, known for films like Despicable Me.
Jujutsu Kaisen Will Have To Find A Worthy Replacement
I’m so excited about Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Part 2! From what I understand, production is already underway, which probably means we have a new director leading the charge. It’ll be interesting to see if they brought back the original director, or if someone fresh is bringing their own creative spin to the show. Either way, I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
What Shouta Goshazono achieved with the first part of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 was exceptional, and it will be a challenge to match that level of quality. However, that doesn’t mean the second part won’t be great. Japan has many incredibly skilled animation directors and storyboard artists who are capable of producing something truly impressive. While it might not be quite as good as the first part, it still has the potential to be fantastic.
