Jujutsu Kaisen Sequel Shows How Maki Zenin Surpassed Toji Fushiguro

Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen has delivered many exciting scenes, including Maki Zenin’s intense battle with the Zenin clan, which ended with her defeating the entire family after unlocking her full potential. This fight led many Jujutsu Kaisen fans to compare Maki to Toji Fushiguro, and debate which one is the more powerful fighter.

Gege Akutami has established in the story that Maki Zenin’s training during the Culling Game has made her as strong as Toji Fushiguro. She demonstrates this power during the fight with Sukuna, and the sequel, Modulo, suggests she’s now even surpassed him in ability.

How Maki Awakened Her Heavenly Restriction Fully

Maki Zenin quickly became a popular character in Jujutsu Kaisen, but she was unique compared to other sorcerers. She had a limited amount of cursed energy, and surprisingly, she needed glasses to even see curses. Although her cursed energy wasn’t strong, she had some – unlike Toji Fushiguro, who had none at all. Toji’s lack of cursed energy was due to a rare condition called Complete Heavenly Restriction, which gave him exceptional physical abilities.

Season 3, Episode 4 of Jujutsu Kaisen marked a turning point for Maki. Because she was a twin, she’d always been at a disadvantage in the world of Jujutsu, as the universe treats twins as a single entity, limiting her potential. However, after Mai’s death, Maki broke free from this restriction. Stripped of all cursed energy, she unexpectedly became incredibly powerful. Her strength and senses were immediately boosted to an extraordinary degree. The Zenin Clan noticed this, comparing her to Toji, and fans are now debating whether she’s surpassed him in power.

Gauging Maki’s Power Compared To Toji Fushiguro In JJK

Currently in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, Maki hasn’t surpassed Toji in strength. While she impressively defeated the entire Zen’in clan, she hadn’t reached her full potential yet. That potential is unlocked during the Culling Game arc, where she achieves a mental breakthrough thanks to Rokujushi Miyo. Following a timeskip, the author, Gege, confirms that Maki has become a fighter on par with Toji. Essentially, from that point onward in the series, Maki is at least as strong as Toji, a fact confirmed by the creator himself.

Because this comes directly from Gege Akutami, it’s clear Toji isn’t stronger than Maki – they’ve been equals for a long time. The real question has always been whether Maki surpasses Toji, or if they’ll remain evenly matched. And Akutami’s story has now provided the answer.

How Maki Surpassed Toji After The Shinjuku Showdown Arc

Watching the Culling Game unfold, it became pretty clear to me that Maki Zenin was just as strong as Toji. If they ever actually fought, I think it would have ended in a tie. She even seems to have a slight advantage when it comes to weaponry. Toji used to wield the Inverted Spear of Heaven, but Gojo Satoru destroyed it years ago. While Toji might have the Split Soul Katana now, Maki has a copy of it that her sister, Mai, gave her.

Beyond her physical strength, Maki truly shines while battling Sukuna, the King of Curses. She performed exceptionally well, even managing to surprise Sukuna himself by sneaking up on him and piercing him with her katana. This feat is arguably more impressive than anything Toji ever accomplished against a weakened teenage Gojo.

Sukuna highly praised Maki, even comparing fighting her to his incredibly difficult battle against Mahoraga during the Shibuya Incident. He noted that she anticipates and reacts to his attacks better than most other sorcerers. This establishes Maki as one of the strongest characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen world by the story’s end.

Why Her Evolution Continues In Modulo

The initial Jujutsu Kaisen story concluded with Sukuna’s defeat and Maki Zenin’s survival. However, the story didn’t end there. Creator Gege Akutami continued the series with a sequel called Modulo, set 68 years after Sukuna’s fall. Maki plays a significant role in this new story, as the main characters, Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu, are revealed to be her grandchildren, born from her relationship with Yuta.

The latest installment of the story reveals that Maki lived to be 77 years old – nearly 50 years longer than Toji. This allowed her to gain a wealth of experience through countless battles and hardships. Additionally, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo shows that Maki mastered a technique Toji never learned. The story also features Maki’s grandson, Tsurugi Okkotsu, who demonstrates a Simple Domain technique using his cursed tool – a skill he learned from her training.

Fans will recall that Maki and Toji didn’t demonstrate this ability in the original story. However, Tsurugi’s knowledge of it suggests Maki created the technique and taught it to him. This gives Maki a significant edge over opponents like Toji Fushiguro, and clearly establishes her as the more powerful of the two.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is available to read in its entirety on Manga Plus.
