This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Final arc.
Summary
- Sukuna Was the Strongest in the Heian Era
- Sukuna Was Brought Back in the Modern Era
- Gege Reveals Bits From Sukuna’s Past
Recently concluded, the captivating tale of “Jujutsu Kaisen” continues to hold its audience spellbound. Among the most enthralling narratives to emerge from Jump in recent memory, much of its success can be attributed to an extraordinary ensemble of characters, featuring not just heroic protagonists but also formidable antagonists like Ryomen Sukuna, the Curse King.
In the tale, Sukuna is consistently portrayed as an incredibly powerful being whose might surpasses that of many others. However, a great deal about his earlier life remains veiled, even after the story has concluded. Recently, Gege Akutami has provided insights into Sukuna’s past dating back to the Heian Era and unveiled the circumstances surrounding how he arrived in the current era and the events that transpired centuries ago.
Sukuna’s Untapped Past From The Heian Era
- Sukuna Was The Strongest In The Heian Era
- Sukuna Was Brought Back In The Modern Era
As an eager spectator of the captivating world of Jujutsu Kaisen, I’ve longed for a glimpse into the past, specifically the Heian Era Flashback. Ever since the series’ inception, fans like myself have yearned for this moment, holding onto hope that creator Gege Akutami would delve into Sukuna’s motivations and his past. However, it seems that Gege has chosen a different path, as he hasn’t felt compelled to unravel Sukuna’s past through a flashback sequence. Instead, Gege has subtly revealed fragments of Sukuna’s character within the main narrative, but not extensively through flashbacks.
Throughout heaven and earth, he alone is the honored one. — Narrator on Sukuna
In the realm of Jujutsu Kaisen, I’ve witnessed some intriguing revelations unfold. Gege, our storyteller, has shared that Sukuna was born with his unique form due to a horrifying fact – he consumed his brother in the womb. This explains his peculiar appearance to us fans.
Moreover, we’re aware that at some point, Sukuna entered into a pact with Kenjaku, transforming into a cursed object. However, what I recently uncovered in an additional chapter was even more captivating – it offered a glimpse into the first encounter between Sukuna and Uraume during the Heian era. This meeting shed light on how Uraume came to serve under Sukuna.
In the narrative of Jujutsu Kaisen, the much-anticipated flashback sequence featuring Ryomen Sukuna never materialized, leaving a significant chunk of his story untold and potentially unrevealed for fans. Although mangaka Gege generally prefers not to delve into character backstories through the main storyline, he is open to discussing them during Q&A sessions. During a recent Jujutsu Kaisen event in Japan, Gege responded to numerous fan questions, including those regarding the Shinjuku Showdown Arc and up to Volume 27. To some extent, Sukuna’s past was also touched upon in these responses.
Gege Reveals Bits From Sukuna’s Past
Sukuna’s Body Was Dug Up, Likely By Tengen
(Your text) Gege Akutami has finally explained a very important part of Sukuna’s past to the fans. Here’s what he had to say when asked about Sukuna’s Heian past:
In the world of sorcery, when a pact is made with Kenjaku, body parts transform into cursed objects. Unique to Sukuna was the possession of twenty fingers. It’s suggested that Sukuna’s body was cared for by Uraume, but after their demise, it disappeared (possibly recovered by someone, hinted to be Tengen). The fact that Sukuna’s body had become a sokushinbutsu, or mummified corpse, amused him, despite his arrogant and powerful nature, as he was still transformed into a Buddha-like figure. — Translated by Gege Akutami
From Gege’s statements, we learn that Uraume was responsible for preserving Sukuna’s body following its demise; however, after both their deaths, it appears Tengen may have been the one who obtained access to the corpse. This revelation became crystal clear to Sukuna upon discovering his skull, an amusing turn of events for him.
Will Sukuna Return To The Story?
In the realm of Jujutsu Kaisen, I’ve observed that the concept of reincarnation holds significant weight. Given that Wasuki Itadori bears a striking resemblance to Sukuna’s brother, it’s not entirely out of the question that Sukuna himself may find a way to return, perhaps years down the line.
If granted another chance, I, being the one known as Sukuna, would tread a new road, one where I’d transform into a benevolent figure instead of the character you may have come to know.
At long last, the concluding chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, chapter 271, hit the shelves on September 29, 2024. Readers can immerse themselves in this captivating series by accessing it via Manga Plus and Shonen Jump mobile applications.
