Jujutsu Kaisen: Tsurugi Okkotsu Is Maki’s Perfect Successor, And Here’s Why

This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga.

With the release of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 still over a year away—scheduled for January 2026—fans are currently following the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapters. These chapters, of which more than five have been published so far, are uncovering more about the Simurians and a new generation of Jujutsu Sorcerers in Japan, particularly Maki and Yuta Okkotsu’s grandchildren, Yuka and Tsurugi.

Tsurugi Okkotsu shares noticeable similarities with both Megumi Fushiguro and Maki Zenin – he has their intense stare, quiet demeanor, calm focus, and quick thinking. Ultimately, Tsurugi wants to follow in Maki Zenin’s footsteps and become her successor, a fitting replacement for her in today’s world.

Tsurugi Okkotsu Is the Next Maki Zenin

Tsurugi Inherits More From Maki Than From Yuta

  • Maki and Tsurugi share many similarities.
  • Tsurugi deeply respects Maki and aspires to become her official successor.

It’s a huge challenge to live up to someone like Maki Zenin, but Tsurugi Okkotsu is determined to try and follow in her footsteps. He really wants to become as strong as she is, and he understands that will take incredible dedication, power, and a lot of hard work. He knows he won’t become powerful quickly, but he’s ready to overcome any obstacle, even battling sorcerers from other worlds.

Like Maki, Tsurugi doesn’t have much cursed energy, and that’s why he trained with her instead of Yuta when he was younger. This means Tsurugi is naturally gifted with incredible physical strength and fighting skills to make up for his limited cursed energy. Thanks to Maki’s training, he’s become a very powerful sorcerer.

Like Maki, Tsurugi strongly believes everyone should be free to choose their own path and reach their full potential, without interference from others. He was upset when the Gojo Clan gave him Yuta’s ring for protection, instead of his sister, and felt it was a slight. This experience motivated him to prove himself to the Gojo Clan, just as Maki demonstrated her power and resolve.

Tsurugi Okkotsu Is Heavenly Restricted Like Maki Zenin

Tsurugi Has Low Levels of Cursed Energy

Like Maki Zenin, Tsurugi Okkotsu has a limitation in Jujutsu Kaisen. Unlike most sorcerers who rely on their own cursed energy, Tsurugi mainly fights using a cursed tool called Honoyagi because his cursed energy is weak. He also uses techniques from the New Shadow Style while wielding Honoyagi to defeat his enemies.

Viewers of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo have been impressed with Tsurugi Okkotsu’s fighting abilities. Though he still has some growing to do before he’s as strong as Maki, many believe he has the potential to exceed her power, and even surpass Yuka, who represents everything he isn’t. Yuka is naturally gifted with a huge amount of cursed energy, but Tsurugi has to rely on hard work and training to make up for his relatively low cursed energy.

I’ll make them realize she doesn’t need a wedding ring—after all, she’s Maki Zenin’s grandson.”—Tsurugi Okkotsu

It’s no surprise Maki acted like a loving grandmother to Tsurugi, likely because she saw a bit of herself in him. Since Tsurugi is determined to follow in her footsteps, he has the potential to unlock his full power once his natural limitations are revealed. Right now, it’s unclear what will trigger this awakening, but it could be connected to his sister.

Tsurugi Is Poised to Become Even Stronger

Currently, Tsurugi Okkotsu isn’t as powerful as Maki Zenin, but he has the potential to become a top-level Jujutsu Sorcerer. Based on the way Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is developing, fans anticipate Tsurugi will become stronger. Future battles will likely force him to improve his skills, learn new techniques, and reach his peak abilities. If a war breaks out between humans and the Simurians, Tsurugi will need to fight with everything he’s got. He must survive and prove his clan wrong about his capabilities, while also living up to Maki’s legacy.
