Jujutsu Kaisen: Who Were The Most Overrated Characters?

Jujutsu Kaisen: Who Were The Most Overrated Characters?

Key Takeaways

  • Megumi was built up as a powerful character but never reached his full potential, making him overrated.
  • Hanami, a Disaster Curse, didn’t live up to its potential despite being one of the strongest in the series.
  • Characters like Ryu, who had high energy output, failed to defeat their enemies, making them overrated in the series.

As a die-hard fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I can’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia when I think about Suguru Geto. This man was a powerhouse during his time, standing shoulder to shoulder with Gojo as one of the strongest sorcerers. His battles were legendary, and he truly embodied the ideology that the strong should protect the weak. But alas, fate had other plans for him.

In the storyline of Jujutsu Kaisen, being the strongest serves as a key theme. This idea is instrumental in shaping the character arcs of Gojo and Sukuna, two highly popular characters who have both been labeled the strongest sorcerers of their respective times. Their battles decide whether it’s wiser to live in solitude or to foster the abilities of others, demonstrating incredible power levels.

Nevertheless, even though strength plays a crucial role in character development, some characters in Jujutsu Kaisen have been brought into the story as extremely powerful individuals. However, these characters, despite being built up as formidable, haven’t really lived up to their supposed position within the power structure of the series. It doesn’t imply that they are weak by any stretch of the imagination, but their strength falls short compared to the most powerful characters in the story. Let’s examine who these characters are.

Megumi Had Wasted Potential

A Character Who Was Supposed To Be The Strongest

First AppearanceJujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 1, “Ryomen Sukuna”
Story ArcMarch 5, 2018

Since the moment Megumi made his debut in the narrative, it was evident that he harbored a multitude of secrets behind his formidable power, particularly when taking into account the intricacies of his Cursed Technique. As the story unfolded, subtle clues about his staggering potential began to surface, such as a flashback revealing that an individual who wielded his Cursed Technique in the past was capable of slaying a Gojo clan member, bearing both the Limitless and Six Eyes Techniques. This solitary flashback served as a testament to Megumi’s unparalleled prowess when fully actualized.

Winning by dying and winning even if you die are two completely different things, Megumi.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve always admired Megumi, seeing him as a potential equal to Gojo. Yet, throughout the series, we barely scratched the surface of his true power. Absent for most of the story due to Sukuna possessing him, Megumi received minimal growth in terms of strength. Consequently, he was unable to master Mahoraga and demonstrate his newfound might, which led many to question his standing among the characters. However, it wasn’t until Sukuna took over his body that we truly grasped his potential – a power level high enough to challenge and potentially defeat Gojo, revealing just how much he had been underrated in our eyes.

Hanami Was A Weak Disaster Curse

Hanami Didn’t Live Up To Its Fellow Curses

First AppearanceJujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 10, “After the Rain”
Debut DateMay 14, 2018

In contemporary times, the Disaster Curses were the most potent manifestations of vengeful spirits. Among these formidable creatures was Hanami, a powerful monster born out of human fear and mistreatment towards nature. With a prodigious Cursed Ability, Hanami could summon enormous flora and fauna to inflict massive damage on its adversaries. This destructive power was vividly demonstrated during the Kyoto Goodwill Event, where it wreaked havoc at Jujutsu High, causing extensive destruction.

In our next life, we won’t be the same as before, but I’ll eagerly look forward to the moment when we cross paths once more.

Despite its immense strength, Hanami struggled to accomplish much. On the other hand, Todo and Yuji managed to subdue it, even though they weren’t at their peak power during that encounter. This forced Hanami to activate its Domain, but it failed in doing so as well. At the onset of the Shibuya Incident, Gojo easily overpowered this Catastrophe Curse by simply boosting his Infinity’s output without much effort.

Ryu Had The Greatest Cursed Energy Output

He Failed To Defeat His Enemies

Jujutsu Kaisen: Who Were The Most Overrated Characters?
First AppearanceJujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 172, “Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Part 13”
Debut DateJanuary 31, 2022

400 years ago, Ryu Ishigori, a sorcerer reborn, found himself in the Culling Game. His prowess was legendary, as he was known to possess the most potent Cursed Energy among all participants in this event. This strength was evident through his formidable Cursed Technique, which allowed him to unleash a cataclysmic wave of energy reminiscent of something straight out of Dragon Ball.

He’s a hotshot who boasts the highest Cursed Energy output of all the players.

The primary cause for considering him excessively praised stems from how he handled some formidable characters in the series. In confrontations with two potent sorcerers, Ryu ended up losing to Yuta, although he demonstrated a reasonable struggle. Yet, his duel with Sukuna was cut short; Sukuna had already dismembered Ryu before he could respond.

Suguru Geto May Be The Weakest Special Grade

The Weakest Special Grade Sorcerer

First AppearanceJujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 0-2, “Blacker and Blacker”
Debut DateMay 26, 2017

Suguru Geto initially captivated fans as a pivotal character during the Hidden Inventory storyline, which portrayed his transformation into a villain. Prior to this dark turn, Geto was considered equally powerful as Gojo among sorcerers, and consistently demonstrated his strength by effortlessly overpowering those weaker than him. This ability to protect reflected Gojo’s belief that the strongest should shield the vulnerable. However, everything changed when Toji entered the scene, causing a domino effect that significantly altered the destiny of the Jujutsu world.

You should at least curse me at the end.

Following his defeat at the hands of Toji and witnessing Gojo’s transformation into the supreme sorcerer, Geto ultimately transformed into a villain. In the storyline of “Jujutsu Kaisen 0”, he encounters Yuta, another Special Grade sorcerer, but one relatively inexperienced compared to Geto. Despite their similar high-level abilities, Yuta was able to outmatch and eventually defeat Geto, leading to his demise at the hands of Gojo. Although Geto was exceptionally powerful, he proved no match for those on an equal level with him.

Kashimo Was Hyped As The Strongest Of His Era

Kashimo Couldn’t Compete With The Strongest Characters of Jujutsu Kaisen

First AppearanceJujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 158, “Kogane”
Debut DateSeptember 13, 2021

Among all characters in the franchise, it’s widely believed that Hajime Kashimo is overrated. Known as the strongest sorcerer of the Edo Period, fans had high expectations for him because he was compared to notable figures like Sukuna and Gojo. However, since his debut during the Culling Game arc, his portrayal as a powerful sorcerer didn’t meet the expectations set by his status as the only other individual known to fight formidable foes in his time.

Turn up the volume, it’s a funeral for the living!

In the heat of Jujutsu Kaisen’s battlefield, I squared off against Hakari – a fight that was undoubtedly one of the best. But alas, I fell short, unable to deploy my Cursed Technique which, as we all know, is a game-changing move but can only be used once. This set the stage for speculation about my capabilities, suggesting I might not have been in the same league as Sukuna and Gojo. Yet, the fans clung onto hope, anticipating the moment I would unleash that technique.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
