As a long-time reader of Jujutsu Kaisen, I must say I find myself both excited and disappointed at the same time. The story has been captivating, to say the least, with its intricate plotlines, rich world-building, and diverse cast of characters. However, it seems that the author’s focus on character development has left some characters underdeveloped or, in some cases, tragically underutilized.
This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen’s Shinjuku Showdown Arc.
In the grand finale of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” some pivotal battles have unfolded, making the storyline incredibly engaging. Lately, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has been nothing short of thrilling, with Sukuna persistently clashing swords with sorcerers. His encounters stretch from his duel against Gojo, right up to the attack on him, and through it all, he’s managed to stand tall amidst a horde of sorcerers.
Currently, the manga “JJK” is nearing its conclusion, with the King of Curses set to fall imminently. This was unexpectedly announced to be happening sooner than fans anticipated. However, this announcement has left readers bewildered as there are numerous plot threads left unresolved, making it challenging to tie up all the loose ends within just 5 chapters. Consequently, the final arc of “JJK” has been met with disappointment not only for the individual character arcs but also for the overall narrative theme of the story.
How Jujutsu Kaisen’s Final Saga Has Developed
Jujutsu Kaisen Has Shown High-octane Battles To The Fans
As a die-hard fan of JJK, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Shinjuku Showdown arc. This part of the story is deeply intertwined with the Culling Game, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride, to say the least! The highlight for me was when Gojo squared off against Sukuna after his release. Let me tell you, every week I found myself on the edge of my seat, completely gripped by the intense action and captivating plot twists. What made it even more exciting was seeing Gojo back in the game, and he certainly brought some dazzling firepower to the battlefield!
Farewell, Gojo Satoru! I shall never forget you for as long as I live! – Sukuna
Unfortunately, Gojo met his demise, marking the commencement of a raid against the King of Curses. Since then, viewers have witnessed various formidable sorcerers wielding their powers against Sukuna in this offensive, starting with Yuji and Higuruma, progressing to Maki, Kusakabe, and more recently, Todo. Now, it appears that the climax of this battle is approaching, as we find ourselves at a one-on-one showdown between Yuji and Sukuna. It’s looking likely that this fight will wrap up soon. The author seems to be laying the groundwork for the protagonist to defeat Sukuna, and in doing so, he has bestowed upon him the Shrine cursed technique, a skill hinted at from the very start of the series.
After years upon years of growth, Yuji has finally tapped into this power. Not only that, but he has also gained access to a domain expansion, and Yuji has already tapped into it in his battle against Sukuna. It is likely that this battle is going to be settled inside his domain, and the king of curses is going to fall soon.
On August 18th, 2024, Gege Akutami officially declared that the tale of Jujutsu Kaisen was drawing to a close. This revelation didn’t come as a shock to readers, who had already suspected that the series would be wrapping up soon. Interestingly, the author initially intended to conclude the story in 2023 but found himself unable to do so. As time went on, he confirmed his plans for a 2024 ending. However, due to numerous unresolved plot threads, fans remain skeptical that JJK will tie up as swiftly as it seems to be planning.
Essentially, the author announced in his message that Jujutsu Kaisen would end in five more chapters, from JJK chapter 267. This essentially means that JJK chapter 271 is going to be the last chapter of the story, where all the conflict is going to be dealt with, and a resolution is going to be provided to the fans. Here is what the author had to say about the story’s conclusion:
As a writer who has poured countless hours into creating my story, I am thrilled to announce that we are nearing the end. The journey thus far has been filled with twists and turns, but thanks to the unwavering support and cooperation of each and every reader, I have found the strength to bring this tale of “Jujutsu Kaisen” to a satisfying conclusion. The final five chapters will be my most challenging yet, as I strive to meet the expectations set by my fans. So dear readers, please be patient with me as I work tirelessly to deliver a finale that honors your investment in this story. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey!
The Missing Factor In JJK’s Final Saga
Jujutsu Kaisen Has A Plethora Of Issues To Resolve Still
In terms of the climactic chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, there are several aspects that the narrative could benefit from expanding. For instance, the portrayal of characters lacks depth and intensity for most of them. The lead character, Yuji, while having his fanbase, doesn’t seem to be a character that readers deeply connect with or consider as the embodiment of the story. This is a point acknowledged by the author himself, who admitted that he didn’t manage to create a captivating character in Yuji that leaves readers hooked. Instead, characters such as Gojo and Megumi tend to garner more enthusiasm from readers as they are perceived as the most intriguing personalities within the storyline.
Domain Expansion! – Yuji Itadori
This paints a very clear picture as to how The author focuses on his character writing. This doesn’t just go for Yuji. All the characters in the story, such as Nobara, were dealt a very terrible fate. Nobara was killed off way too early, and all the exciting plot points that the author has set up for her were completely erased. To make things worse, her death was left ambiguous on purpose by the author, and later, it was implied that she had truly died. Gojo met a similar fate, and fans knew that his story was not fulfilling either.
Similar fates were given to many other characters in the story, and it is safe to say that the writing for most individuals is not up to the mark. Another example of this is Shoko, who fans know to be a glorified hospital in JJK. She simply doesn’t do anything but heal people and there is absolutely no characterization to this individual. Replacing her with a normal hospital would change absolutely nothing in the plot, and that says a lot. Just like her, there are many other characters in the story who are dealt with in a similar manner.
The Lack Of Characterization For Sukuna
The main villain of the story, Ryomen Sukuna, is yet another similar individual. Fans know little to nothing about Sukuna. Now, there is a notion among the fans that every villain needs an elaborate backstory. This isn’t true. Every villain does not need a backstory or a sob story. Some villains are perfect with the characterization they receive as arcs go. Strength-wise, Sukuna certainly has lived up to all expectations and more. However, there are elements to this character that fans would want to know about. An exciting connection was drawn between Sukuna and Yuji’s father early on in the story. Even his birth was teased by the author to be very exciting, but unfortunately, none of these things have been elaborated upon in the series.
Much like characters such as Hakari and Uraume, among others, haven’t made any substantial contributions, it’s worth noting that even a major antagonist from JJK, Kenjaku, had an anticlimactic demise. Moreover, the grand scheme he’s been developing for countless centuries – specifically, the merger – seems unlikely to occur as the story is wrapping up in just five more chapters. This hurried ending appears to fall short of fan expectations in multiple aspects.
