Jujutsu Kaisen’s Most Overhyped Characters Who Couldn’t Live Up to the Hype

Summary

  • Megumi was built up as the second-coming of Gojo but ended up being useless.
  • Ryu Ishigori had the highest Cursed Energy output but was easily defeated by Yuta and Sukuna.
  • Hajime Kashimo was the biggest fraud, built up as the strongest but defeated effortlessly by the King of Curses.

In the narrative of Jujutsu Kaisen, power or strength plays a pivotal role. The idea of ‘the strongest’ is repeatedly highlighted, shaping the growth and development of significant characters like Yuji, Gojo, and Sukuna. Moreover, this theme was instrumental in instigating many epic encounters between the series’ most formidable heroes and villains.

In every series that features powerful characters who significantly shift the power dynamics, there are some who are labeled as ‘frauds’. This is a term frequently used by fans of Jujutsu Kaisen, to describe characters who were portrayed as mighty figures by the storyline but ultimately didn’t live up to their supposed potential. While there are subtleties to this label, let’s examine those who best fit this description.

Megumi Was Built Up As The Second-Coming Of Gojo

He Ended Up Being Incredibly Useless

First Appearance Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 1, “Ryomen Sukuna”
Story Arc Fearsome Womb Arc
  • Despite having the strongest Cursed Technique and having insane potential, Megumi never did anything with it and was missing for much of the series as well.

Often, characters in Jujutsu Kaisen may not be naturally strong, but they compensate for this by possessing an extraordinarily potent Cursed Technique. Megumi Fushiguro inherited the Ten Shadows, a technique that is believed to be among the strongest of all time along with Infinity, yet he rarely demonstrated its full potential. Despite being billed as a reincarnation of Gojo, Megumi’s actions throughout the series failed to meet the high expectations set for him.

I will become stronger. I’ll do anything it takes.

The pinnacle power of the Ten Shadows resides within Shadow Mahoraga, yet Megumi consistently struggled to control the Shikigami and only summoned it for minimal dangers. Instead, he leaned on conventional Shikigami, and while he managed to subdue a High-Ranking Cursed Spirit during the Fearsome Womb storyline using an incomplete domain, his performances in later arcs suggested that his full potential may never materialize. Interestingly, for most of the series, he was absent due to Sukuna’s possession of his body.

Ryu Ishigori Had Incredible Reserves Of Cursed Energy

The Highest Cursed Energy Output In History

First Appearance Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 173, “Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Part 13”
Story Arc Culling Game
  • Ryu had the greatest Cursed Energy output in history but was defeated by Yuta and effortlessly killed by Sukuna.

In a saga teeming with formidable characters such as Ryomen Sukuna and Gojo Satoru, it’s remarkable that Ryu Ishigori, who was initially a sorcerer in the Edo Era but later reincarnated into the Culling Game, holds the distinction of having the highest Cursed Energy output ever recorded. Notably, he was involved in a three-way confrontation against Yuta and Uro, where he demonstrated notable skill. Yet, considering his immense energy reserves and historical record-breaking output, one would anticipate even more impressive feats from him.

Do you tell a kid in front of a feast to calm down and eat slow?

From my vantage point, it’s evident that his lethal technique is indeed catastrophic, yet its practical applications are quite restricted, a fact that became apparent in his engagements. Although Yuta had to exert himself to overcome him, he never found himself in a truly precarious position during their encounter. However, the main reason behind his questionable reputation stems from his dealings with Sukuna. In a rather effortless display by a weakened King of Curses, Yuta was reduced to fragments, suggesting that despite possessing the highest recorded Cursed Energy Output, Ryu falls short when confronting the mightiest adversaries.

Hajime Kashimo Was The Biggest Fraud Of Them All

The Strongest of the Edo Period

First Appearance Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 158, “Kogane”
Story Arc Perfect Preparation Arc
  • Kashimo was built up as the strongest but he couldn’t even defeat Hakari and proved to be nothing more than an afterthought to Sukuna.
  • He also had a one-time-use Cursed Technique, which many fans consider to be weak.

In this series, it’s widely recognized that Gojo and Sukuna are the most powerful characters. Only one other individual, Kashimo from the Edo Period, was once considered the strongest sorcerer. However, in today’s era, Kashimo is seen as a misleading legend within the franchise, often labeled as the biggest fraud by fans. Despite being hyped as a formidable opponent for Gojo and Sukuna, Kashimo met an easy demise at the hands of the King of Curses.

Turn up the volume! Because this is a funeral for the living!

At this point, Sukuna hadn’t yet mastered the Reverse Cursed Technique and was still recuperating from his battle with Gojo. Yet, he effortlessly dispatched Kashimo. What’s more surprising is that Kashimi couldn’t even defeat Hakari. Of course, Kashimi didn’t fully utilize his Cursed Technique, but the mere possession of a technique that wreaks havoc on one’s own body after a single use is what led many fans to perceive Kashimi as the character in this series who was overly hyped. In contrast, Sukuna and Gojo fought for 13 chapters, while Sukuna ended Kashimi in only 4.

Jogo May Have Had The Worst Luck In The Series

A Controversial Pick

First Appearance Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 10, “After the Rain”
Story Arc Fearsome Womb Arc
  • Jogo lost the only two fights he ever had. However, they were against the strongest characters in history, so he may not be a fraud like the others.

This choice might raise eyebrows for some, and it’s not hard to see why. After all, Jogo belonged to the elite group of 4 Special Grade Disaster Curses, making him a formidable challenge for our heroes. Yet, there are those who question his authenticity, due to the two instances where he was involved in combat, both ending poorly for him. However, it’s important to note that these were encounters with the strongest characters within the series.

It doesn’t have to be me smiling at the end. As long as Curses emerge as the true humans.

In the series, Jogo possesses an exceptionally high capacity for destruction, showcased during the Shibuya Incident where his anger could dramatically raise the temperature of his surroundings. Yet, he’s only had two significant battles – against Gojo and Sukuna. Both times, they easily humiliated him, demonstrating that even at a distance, they were beyond Jogo’s reach. In fact, Sukuna considered Jogo to be as strong as 8 or 9 fingers in the power scale.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime.
