Summary

- Jujutsu Kaisen introduces strategy to justify power levels and maintain viewer engagement.
In many anime productions, balancing character power levels can be a delicate task, and if not done skillfully, it may come off as laughably inconsistent. Regrettably, some anime creators struggle to make these power boosts appear reasonable, leading to fights that feel somewhat foreseeable and uninteresting in the shonen genre.
I’ve noticed an intriguing debate surrounding the power dynamics in ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’. Some viewers find the escalating power levels to be quite exaggerated, while others believe it adds a captivating element to the battles within this series. The former group suggests that the show is veering towards typical shonen tropes with power scaling issues, whereas the latter asserts that the unique portrayal of power scaling is what keeps the fights engaging in ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’.
Power Scaling And The Problems That Come With It
Is The Power Scaling In Jujutsu Kaisen Uncompelling?
In numerous classic Shonen shows, there appears a power system that seems excessively overpowered. However, certain anime do take power scaling seriously. A fantastic illustration of this is the Demon Slayer, where characters must undergo intense training and encounter treacherous adversaries in order to genuinely enhance their abilities.
Instead of that, let’s consider shows like Naruto, Bleach, and One Punch Man, where power scaling becomes incredibly extreme and absurd. The main figures in these series are frequently gifted with extraordinary abilities that surpass all other characters. However, Jujutsu Kaisen presents a unique perspective on overpowered characters, which adds an intriguing aspect to the battles it portrays.
This story features some truly formidable characters, such as Gojo Satoru and Ryomen Sukuna, who are arguably the most potent in the entire series. Unlike many traditional Shonen anime with problematic power scaling, it skillfully portrays the intricate strategic battles against these divine beings.
Or:
The story is packed with incredibly powerful characters, including Gojo Satoru and Ryomen Sukuna, who are among the strongest in the whole series. Unlike typical Shonen anime that struggle with power scaling issues, it masterfully depicts the complex strategies involved in fighting these divine adversaries.
Gojo: The Most Powerful Sorcerer In The Present
In simple terms, Gojo Satoru stands out as the strongest Jujutsu sorcerer in the current era, a fact recognized by all other sorcerers and curses. This recognition breeds fear among them, leading to a reluctance to confront him. There’s no question that he could single-handedly defeat any sorcerer, regardless of their rank.
Gojo Satoru possesses an extraordinary ability known as “domain expansion,” which functions like an infinite void that can draw adversaries into a boundless, empty space. Overwhelmed by an excessive amount of information in this space, they become vulnerable, ensuring a decisive victory for Gojo Satoru. This destructive power is not limited to his domain expansion alone; it also poses a significant threat to curses.
Gojo Satoru’s domain expansion, essentially an endless void, can drag enemies into it and inundate them with excessive information, leaving them defenseless. This makes it virtually impossible for the adversaries to resist him, making his victories a certainty. It is not just his domain expansion that poses a threat to curses; it also does so.
In my perspective, there’s nothing as a level playing field. Life itself is about equilibrium. Yet, in my unique situation, I am the equilibrium.
In a more simplified manner: Gojo has access to additional cursed techniques, such as Limitless, Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue, Reversal: Red, and the most lethal one, Hollow Purple. While Gege Akutami may have made Gojo Satoru excessively powerful, he ensured that the battles in the series remained unpredictable, never favoring our blue-eyed sorcerer too much. This becomes particularly clear when Gojo engages in combat with Kenjaku and other curses.
There’s no denying that Gojo could have vanquished all these cursed beings, but surprisingly, the curses were able to thwart his overwhelming power by employing clever strategies during the Shibuya Incident arc, resulting in Gojo’s imprisonment in another realm. This unexpected turn of events temporarily removed him from play, significantly altering the power dynamics. With Gojo out of commission, characters like Yuji Itadori, Yuta Okkutsu, and Megumi Fushiguro had their moment to step up and demonstrate their potential as exceptional sorcerers.
Sukuna: The Greatest Sorcerer Of The Past
In simpler terms, just like Gojo, the formidable cursed spirit known as Sukuna poses a significant threat. It could be argued that both Sukuna and Gojo are the most powerful characters in the entire series. Despite not being at his full capacity, Sukuna demonstrates an impressive ability to overpower even the strongest adversaries using Yuji Itadori’s body as his vessel.
If you value your life, I suggest you kneel and beg – Sukuna
During the Shibuya Incident, we witnessed the full extent of Sukuna’s abilities for the first time. In a remarkable display, he managed to save Megumi by summoning an incredibly potent Shikigami named Mahoraga. Tragically, the summoner was killed once Mahoraga accomplished its mission. Yet, Sukuna masterfully overcame this powerful Shikigami. During the same arc, Sukuna encountered another high-grade curse, Jogo, and though he was defeated effortlessly by Jogo in the Shibuya Incident storyline.
Domain Expansions And Non-Sorcerers
In Jujutsu Kaisen, the core power mechanism revolves around a distinct ability known as “domain expansion.” Each character possesses their own unique domain expansion that generates a protective barrier. Within this zone, their curse techniques become more potent and precise, ensuring every strike connects. Crafting a domain expansion demands extraordinary abilities and an abundance of cursed energy.
Currently, each domain expansion varies, ranging from potentially deadly to comparatively harmless. This discrepancy can make the power scaling in Jujutsu Kaisen appear somewhat inconsistent, as even weaker characters are capable of creating overly powerful domain expansions. Additionally, a concern arises when characters like Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin, who primarily rely on physical strength, manage to outperform sorcerers with potent cursed techniques solely through their physical abilities. This is where the power equilibrium becomes questionable.
How Jujutsu Kaisen Tackles With Overpowered Characters
Absolutely! While it can seem like Jujutsu Kaisen’s power distribution is unbalanced at times, the show actually does an exceptional job of balancing things out by incorporating strategy into the battles. Even when characters appear incredibly strong, the strategic moves made by weaker characters during their fights add complexity and maintain the intrigue and excitement throughout the series. A wonderful illustration of this is Maki, who may not be able to see curses but possesses incredible physical strength that equals that of high-grade sorcerers.
Without a shadow of a doubt, I’m utterly captivated by Sukuna and Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen! It’s an undisputed fact that these two towering figures hold the greatest power within this world. The thrilling climax we all eagerly anticipate is their inevitable showdown, but the exact outcome of their battle remains a tantalizing enigma since both are unparalleled in their might.
Despite the meticulously structured battles by Gege Akutami, leaving the future encounters shrouded in uncertainty – will Gojo ultimately succumb to Sukuna or emerge victorious? Can Yuji Itadori successfully vanquish Sukuna and break free, or will he remain entangled? These intriguing queries are what captivates us and keeps Jujutsu Kaisen engaging, despite its debatable power balance.
