Just Cause 5 ‘Would Be a No Go’, Says Avalanche Founder

Reports emerged earlier this year that Just Cause 5 was canceled during its creation, potentially ending the open-world action series. Christofer Sundberg, founder of Avalanche Studios, recently stated on social media that the studio’s current structure makes it unlikely Just Cause 5 will ever be revived.

In his words, even the reappearance of Just Cause 5 wouldn’t be enough to ‘save’ Avalanche.

We Might Never See Another Just Cause Game

The first Just Cause game came out in 2006 and quickly stood out as a revolutionary open-world action experience. It was a huge game for its time, really testing the capabilities of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox with its expansive world, thrilling missions, and over-the-top stunts.

The game received several updates and releases, ultimately culminating in a fourth version. However, this final installment proved unsuccessful and led to the end of the series. Christofer Sundberg, who founded Avalanche Studios, acknowledged some responsibility for its failure.

Looking back, the issues with Just Cause 4 stemmed from a few things: I stepped back from leading the creative vision, there were difficulties with the publisher, and the team wasn’t quite the right fit. It’s disappointing, because the game actually had a lot of potential.

Sundberg recently discussed the game ‘Contraband’ with his audience. After images of the cancelled project appeared online, he explained his involvement with it.

My team and I originally proposed Contraband to Microsoft back in 2017, and they approved it. The game has evolved significantly since then, and it would have been great to see it released. However, a new Just Cause game (JC5) isn’t possible because almost none of the people who worked on the original Contraband are still with the team.

In the comments under his post, Sundberg became critical of Avalanche’s current operating model:

I’m skeptical. They need to rediscover their passion, be bold, challenge expectations, and create things others deem impossible. I founded Avalanche to be innovative, not conform.
