K-Pop Demon Hunters and Happy Gilmore 2 Have One Thing in Common for Netflix

In a different genre entirely from Adam Sandler’s newest sports comedy sequel “Happy Gilmore 2,” the animated musical fantasy “K-Pop Demon Hunters” has recently achieved the same milestone on Netflix, along with it. The month of July also brought the release of “The Old Guard 2,” which hasn’t been particularly well-received by Netflix viewers, and a variety of classic titles were added to the catalog, such as the “Mission: Impossible” and “Karate Kid” series, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and the debut of “The Sandman” season 2.

In the animation directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans titled “K-Pop Demon Hunters“, we follow the Huntr/x K-pop girl band that doubles as demon hunters, along with their antagonists, the Saja Boys who disguise themselves as a band but are actually demons. The show left some questions unanswered, hinting at a possible sequel. However, at the moment of this writing, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have not announced plans for a follow-up feature.

Although K-Pop Demon Hunters is an animated fantasy musical and Happy Gilmore 2 is a sports comedy, they share a commonality: both have become successful on Netflix after their releases. In fact, K-Pop Demon Hunters set a new record for Netflix’s most-watched animated movie ever, despite being released one month prior to Happy Gilmore 2. The musical has maintained its position in Netflix’s Top 10 Films for six weeks and amassed 26.3 million views. On the other hand, while critics haven’t been too kind to Happy Gilmore 2, it still managed to secure a whopping 46.7 million views upon release, making it the biggest movie opening in Netflix US’ history as per Variety.

K-Pop Demon Hunters and Happy Gilmore 2 Are Both Netflix Hits

Under the direction of Kyle Newacheck, “Happy Gilmore 2” is a follow-up to the 1996 film with the same title, featuring returning stars like Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, and Adam Sandler in the lead role. The story revolves around the character Happy Gilmore, a widowed alcoholic who reenters professional golf to fund his daughter’s ballet school. Unfortunately, the production of “Happy Gilmore 2” faced a difficult adjustment due to Carl Weathers’ passing, as revealed by Sandler in a recent interview. Despite this creative challenge, the sequel has been thriving thus far.

In contrast to the ongoing popularity of “K-Pop Demon Hunters” and “Happy Gilmore 2”, your streaming service boasts a diverse range of offerings that could potentially outshine them. This includes five anime series, such as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”, “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood & Battle Tendency”, and “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, which can be binge-watched over a weekend. Additionally, subscribers are eagerly awaiting the third season of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series, focusing on Ed Gein, and the murder mystery miniseries “Untamed”, starring Eric Bana and Sam Neill, is swiftly climbing the popularity charts.
