About the Kagurabachi Manga
A Contemporary Tour-De-Force
The manga titled “Kagurabachi,” authored by Takeru Hokazono, has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since September 2023. The narrative revolves around Chihiro Rokuhira, a young man who assists his renowned swordsmith father, Kunishige Rokuhira. This father was celebrated for imbuing the swords he crafted with extraordinary powers, even ending the Seitei War single-handedly. The residence of Chihiro, filled with peace and tranquility, was tragically violated by a group of sorcerers known as the Hishaku, who brutally murdered Kunishige Rokuhira. They also made off with six of these “Enchanted Blades,” leaving Chihiro on a path for vengeance, armed with Enten, an unseen seventh blade.
Interestingly, “Kagurabachi” gained notoriety in an unusual manner as memes sprung up after a user on X humorously posted “Enough time has passed,” accompanying an image of “Kagurabachi” followed by Boruto with a Greater Than symbol between them. This was intended to suggest that the then newly-launched title had already surpassed the continuation of Masashi Kishimoto’s acclaimed masterpiece, Naruto.
Following its debut, people started posting memes that humorously likened Kagurabachi to renowned anime and manga series, suggesting it had outperformed all these titles in just its first week. Though the memes were amusing and jokes were cracked, the series quickly gained a passionate and fervent fanbase who found themselves drawn to the title early on. As of May 2nd, Kagurabachi will have circulated over 2.2 million copies. This represents an increase from the 350,000 mark reached in July 2024, which included digital sales, meaning it surpassed that figure by more than tripling it within less than a year. Kagurabachi won the print category of the 10th Next Manga Award in 2024. To date, no anime adaptation has been confirmed, but speculation is running rampant.
Kagurabachi is available to read on VIZ Media’s website.
