As a longtime fan of manga and anime, I’ve read my fair share of stories about ordinary people rising to become heroes. But Kaiji No. 8, or Kafka Hibino, stands out as one of the most relatable and captivating characters I’ve come across. Growing up in a world where Kaijus pose constant threats, Kafka and his childhood friend Mina made a promise that they would grow up to become officers in the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. However, life took us both on different paths.

As a huge fan of Kaiju No. 8, I can tell you that this story revolves around me, or rather, a man named Kafka Hibino. He’s a middle-aged employee at the Kaiju Cleaning Company, and deep down, he harbors a dream to join the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force as an officer. For years, I’ve tried to pass their rigorous entrance exam, but each time I come up short in the second stage. Disappointed and disillusioned, I put my dream on hold and focused on the mundane tasks at hand. But there was one thing that kept me going – a promise I made to my cherished childhood friend, Mina Ashiro. She had become a celebrated captain of the Defense Force’s Third Division, and I longed to stand beside her as an officer. However, the path to joining her seemed insurmountable.

Naoya Matsumoto, the mangaka behind “Kaiju No. 8,” masterfully portrays an ordinary man named Kafka, who carries a remarkable inner flame that surpasses his bodily capabilities. With the application deadline approaching for the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, Kafka views this as his sole chance to join and keep his vow. However, he conceals a hidden truth that could prove fatal: Kafka is Kaiju No. 8, the result of an unfortunate encounter with a parasite. His determination remains unwavering, as his only objective is to reunite with his childhood friend at any expense.

How Do Kafka And Mina Know Each Other?

A Childhood Bond Following Kaiju Attacks

As kids growing up in the same neighborhood, Mina and I formed a strong friendship from an early age. Although the text doesn’t go into detail about our relationship before the devastating Kaiju incident that struck our town, we grew even closer as we grieved over the losses we had suffered. In the manga Kaiju No. 8, an intriguing contrast between Mina and me is revealed when she weeps for her lost pet cat, while I fume about my inability to finish my video game. In that moment, I may have seemed shallow, but I reached out and held Mina’s hand, vowing to take down all the Kaijus and bring justice to our town – including avenging her dear cat.

Mina and Kafka pledge to one another that they’ll grow up to be Anti-Kaiju Third Defense officers together. Their friendly competition leads them to make a vow to be the most impressive officers during their training. As their history unfolds, they delve into Kaiju knowledge: anatomy, weaknesses, and categories. Kafka assumes a protective role, insisting on being as powerful as possible to safeguard Mina. This elicits a chuckle from Mina, reminiscent of typical anime tropes.

Don’t worry! Whenever you get scared… I’ll always be right by your side!

Despite finding it amusing, the prospect of facing Kaiju towering over her leaves Mina with deep-rooted fear. As they grow older and delve deeper into Kaiju studies, it appears that Mina will face greater challenges in overcoming her fears, while Kafka emerges as a promising candidate for a captain’s position within the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. However, the eventual outcomes diverge greatly from these expectations. In adulthood, one ascends to the rank of captain of the Third Division, whereas the other struggles even to make it as an officer.

Kafka and Mina: A Tale Of Two Opposites

How Kafka and Mina Evolved Differently

In due time, Mina ascends to the top of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, earning the position of captain for the Third Division. Her combat power rating is an impressive 96%, making her the strongest member of her division and only second in strength amongst all Defense Force members. Conversely, Kafka repeatedly tries but ultimately fails to secure an officer role. He instead settles for a job with the Kaiju Removal Team, a dedicated group tasked with removing Kaiju remnants for future purposes. With his aspirations shattered, not only did Kafka experience defeat in his attempt to surpass Mina as a cooler officer, but he also fell short of his commitment to support her.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: When I accidentally ingested a parasitic entity during a hospital visit, little did I know that it would grant me the power of a Kaiju. Becoming Kaiju No. 8 was an unexpected twist in my life, and keeping my new identity a secret was a challenge. But when the Third Division was in danger due to a Yoju bomb, I couldn’t just stand by. My determination to save my comrades led me to use my powers to stop other Kaiju, much like Eren Yeager did against Titans in Attack on Titan. It’s a double-edged sword being both an officer of the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force and a Kaiju myself. The struggle is real as I try to navigate my role in the squad while keeping my secret hidden from my friends.

At the end of season one of “Kaiju No. 8“, Kafka gets freed and discovers that he’ll still work for the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, using his Kaiju abilities to help with their objectives. General Shinomiya suspects that Kafka and his powers might be the key to vanquishing the persistent Kaijus on Earth without turning them into Numbers weapons. If Kafka manages to join Mina’s Third Division, he can fight alongside her; otherwise, it’s uncertain. Kafka remains resolved to demonstrate his humanity to the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force or perish in the attempt.
