In the captivating tale of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, Swann experiences numerous unexpected turns as she connects with her dearest companions – Autumn, Nora, and Kat. The unique circumstances they each face shape the direction of the story, intertwining seamlessly with the eerie events unfolding within the forested depths of Velvet Cove.
In the intensely moving scenes of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, it’s Kat Mikaelsen’s experiences that carry the greatest weight and leave players guessing about her future as the first part concludes with a suspenseful twist. If you’re curious to find out more about her journey in Tape 2, this guide will shed light on who Kat is and how her tale unfolds.
Who is Kat in Lost Records: Bloom & Rage?
Note: The information provided below contains SEVERE plot twists pertaining to the game. Proceed with caution, as it might spoil your experience if you haven’t completed the game yet.
Kat Mikaelsen is the youngest sibling of the Mikaelsen family who manage the Mikaelsen Ranch, a popular deer-breeding facility and hunting retreat located in Velvet Cove. Dylan, introduced early on in Tape 1, is Kat’s elder sister. Throughout the game, their parents are only heard but not visibly present.
In simpler terms, we can say that as a child, Kat had a challenging upbringing, suggested by her comments about her parents being very religious, authoritarian, and choosing to educate her at home. She expresses her rebellion through her tomboy-like attire, frequently sneaking out, and it’s evident she dislikes her family’s business. A dispute between Swann, Dylan (and later Corey) in Tape 1 causes Kat to get involved, leading to their friendship along with Autumn and Nora.
As the narrative unfolds, Kat becomes increasingly candid about her resentment and irritation towards her family, with a special focus on Dylan and her complex bond with Corey. It is disclosed in Tape 2 that they shared a closer bond when Kat was younger, and Dylan even persuaded their parents to get Kat her desired pet rabbit. However, the dynamics shifted dramatically once Corey arrived on the scene.
As Swann and the group discover a deserted log cabin in the forest and later unearth an enigmatic pit they label “the abyss”, Kat exhibits an uncommon fascination towards its force and allure. Contrastingly, the other girls appear reluctant to comprehend or trust “the abyss”, but Kat is determined to harness its power for personal purposes, specifically targeting Corey. Following their formation of the band “Bloom and Rage”, the atmosphere amongst the girls and Dylan and Corey becomes increasingly strained, leading them to organize an impromptu performance at the Blue Spruce Bar as a form of retaliation.

At the concert that evening, the girls valiantly sang most of their first track, despite rude comments from the audience. However, Corey and Dylan tried to stop things by abruptly cutting off the music. As tensions rose, Kat angrily addressed the crowd, disregarding the blood streaming from her nose. In a dramatic turn of events, she collapsed, bringing the concert to a sudden end. Dylan then scolded the group, revealing that Kat was battling degenerative leukemia and was running out of time.
During the concert, the girls kept singing their new song despite the crowd being unruly. Corey and Dylan tried to stop them by turning off the music. As things got heated, Kat shouted at everyone, not caring about the blood coming from her nose. She then fainted, ending the concert. Dylan told everyone that Kat had leukemia and was running out of time.
Until then, the girls hadn’t been aware of Kat’s illness. When they learned about it, they were left speechless as Dylan and Corey rushed Kat for immediate medical attention. The first tape ends at this point, leaving the girls’ future uncertain and the story’s outcome much darker and more ominous for Kat.
Is Kat Alive At the End of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage?

At the end of Tape 1, there was a tense moment that made many viewers concerned about Kat, considering Dylan’s revelation about her leukemia. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Swann and Nora found Kat alive and in relatively good health at her home, given the circumstances. In their brief encounter, Kat disclosed she had experienced a hemorrhage during the concert, but claimed to be fine. To prevent hair loss during her upcoming treatment, she decided to cut her hair short with Swann’s assistance (depending on their bond).
As a gamer, I found myself caught in yet another heated exchange with Corey and Dylan, disrupting our reunion once again. It only fueled my anger, pushing me to the brink of action. I devised one final bold plan, determined to see it through while I still could. Not long after, my comrades and I donned masks, targeting the hunting shop owned by my family with unrelenting vandalism. We even torched the deer statue outside as a symbol of our defiance. Yet, my true objective was something more: liberating the deer confined within the nearby barn, destined for the hunter’s game.
Swann and Kat sneak into the barn, releasing all the trapped deer, among them Gertie, the deer that Kat had been caring for. This action angers Corey, who arrives with Dylan shortly after. In a fit of anger, he pursues the deer on his bike. Unfortunately, one of the deer impales him during the chase. Swann and Kat then flee into the forest and manage to reach the cabin where they take refuge, seemingly out of harm’s way.
Eventually, Corey discovers the cabin using a camcorder that Swann had apparently forgotten about. Breaking in, he ignites the cabin with the intention of trapping the girls inside. Somehow, they make it out and encounter “the abyss” yet again.

From this moment on, the sequence of events depends on the decisions made by the player. There are multiple paths that could lead to diverse conclusions at this juncture. Yet, no matter what happens between the character and Corey at the abyss, there’s a single, heart-wrenching element that stays constant.
As the game draws to a close, I find myself unwillingly drawn towards the abyss. If Corey falls, he drags me along with him, his fate sealed regardless of our actions. Alternatively, if he’s pushed in, I seemingly disappear after him. The rationale behind this isn’t entirely clear, but from Swann’s interpretations (which she elucidates more thoroughly in certain endings), it seems that I am seen as a sacrifice to the abyss.
It’s uncertain if Corey’s disappearance directly caused it, but prior to that event in the narrative, Kat seemed inclined towards surrendering to the abyss and its force instead of her illness. This could be another plausible explanation, or perhaps a combination of both. It’s possible she perceived the abyss as desiring one of the girls as a sacrifice and offered herself willingly. By this point in the story, Kat is absent, and the remaining girls, including Dylan, are left to grapple with their grief.

In the closing scene titled ‘Lost Records’, an older Swann re-enters the woods with a camcorder, eventually hearing what appears to be Kat’s voice calling for help. This leads her back to the same chasm. On the other side this time, young Kat’s spirit stands, seemingly imploring Swann for aid. The game presents only one choice – to descend into the abyss. Swann vows to rescue Kat from whatever lies within the depths of the chasm, and that’s where the game concludes.
This situation undoubtedly raises numerous queries among the players, since it remains unclear if Kat has truly survived her terminal illness all these years, or if she has passed away.
DONT NOD has revealed that Lost Records: Bloom & Rage marks the beginning of a new series, much like Life is Strange. The ultimate outcome for characters Kat and Corey remains uncertain and will be explored in upcoming sequels. In the meantime, fans can ponder various theories about their fates. Don’t forget to revisit any uncompleted achievements or trophies from both parts of the game to ensure you’re fully caught up.
