As a huge fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about Keanu Reeves. Despite his impressive resume of film roles, there’s one character he yearns to embody once more. In his own words, he expresses a deep longing to step back into that role again.

Reeves’ acting career took off in the mid-1980s with minor TV and film roles. He gained popularity through the sci-fi comedy “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989), but it was his blockbuster hit “Speed” (1994) that established him as a leading actor. He continued to shine in the blockbuster series “The Matrix” and “John Wick,” securing his position as a top Hollywood star. Interestingly, one of his favorite roles isn’t from these successful projects; instead, he has been eager to reprise it again for quite some time.

In a recent chat with Happy Sad Confused podcast, I, Keanu Reeves, teamed up once more with director Francis Lawrence to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Constantine. During our conversation, we offered an update on the much-anticipated sequel, revealing that the script is currently being developed and expressing our confidence that it will secure approval upon completion. As we delved into my character, John Constantine, a cynical and world-weary man, I couldn’t help but express my yearning to step back into those shoes again. “I can’t wait to play this guy,” I admitted. This desire isn’t new, as I have openly expressed my eagerness to bring the sequel to life. In a previous interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when I was promoting my book, The Book of Elsewhere, I was asked about a character I’d like to revisit. “I would love to play John Constantine again,” I replied. At that time, I had been trying to convince the producers for a sequel and hinted at receiving a “no.” However, nine months later, Constantine 2 was given the green light, and upon my return to Stephen’s show, I thanked him profusely. “I have to say thanks. The power of your show reached so many. I got Colbert-ed in the best way, and it worked,” I expressed.

Lawrence credited Colbert for helping bring Constantine 2 into fruition and noted the film’s enduring popularity, despite the original movie having been released two decades ago. He stated, “I believe it was the mix of that [Colbert interview] and the increasing fanbase of the initial film over time that made people think, ‘We can definitely do this.’ Now, we’ve reached a point where we have the approval to move forward.” Lawrence didn’t disclose specifics about the plot but revealed that Akiva Goldsman is currently writing the script and has been collaborating closely with Reeves. “I feel we have some truly fantastic ideas that we’re extremely enthusiastic about, and I think we’re close to having a solid plan,” Lawrence said. Earlier, the director hinted that they are “nearing the point where we can finally make a sequel.

The anticipation for a new installment of the “Constantine” series has remained strong over time, even though it’s taken a while for another movie to come out. Fans are eagerly awaiting this continuation because there are several storylines left unresolved. For example, many fans are curious about what became of Gabriel following his loss of angelic powers after betraying the divine purpose by conspiring with Lucifer’s son Mammon to bring Hell to Earth. As a half-breed archangel, Gabriel believes humans do not deserve God’s love and forgiveness so readily, leading him to turn the world into a battlefield. However, God deprived them of their power as punishment by making them fully human. Fans are also curious about what transpires with Constantine’s agreement with Lucifer since the first film concludes with Lucifer resurrecting the former after being denied his soul. In the first movie, Constantine earns redemption by sacrificing himself to stop evil. Lucifer then brings him back to life in hopes that he would sin again and end up in Hell. These are just some of the issues fans hope will be addressed in the sequel.
