Kelsey Grammer Calls Beast The ‘MLK Of The Mutants’

Summary

  • Original X-Men stars, including Kelsey Grammer, are joining Avengers: Doomsday.
  • Grammer compares his character Beast to Martin Luther King Jr. – a proud and dignified leader.
  • Grammer’s Beast character is similar to MLK in advocating for justice and unity, promoting nonviolence.

As a fan, I’m thrilled to share that some esteemed actors from the initial X-Men movie series are teaming up for Avengers: Doomsday. Remarkably, one of these cast members has drawn a parallel between their character and the legendary figure, Martin Luther King Jr.

Similar to the Avengers, the X-Men are a highly recognized group of superheroes within Marvel Comics. Both teams were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with each team making their first appearance in September 1963. However, it’s the X-Men that tend to resonate more with comic fans, while the Avengers have found a wider audience through the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday,” both teams will appear, and one of the original X-Men shared insights about their mutant character and its resemblance to one of history’s most significant leaders and activists.

Recently, I had the pleasure of being a guest on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. In the Fox X-Men movies, I’ve taken on the role of Hank McCoy, better known as Beast. With my upcoming appearance in Marvel Studios’ Avengers film, I was asked about my superhero character, and I must say, portraying Beast has been an absolute joy. I feel honored to embody a character who, to me, embodies the qualities of a stalwart, upright, serious-minded, decent man. In many ways, Beast reminds me of the legendary American Baptist minister, activist, and civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. It’s been an enlightening experience bringing this character to life on screen.

I view him as the Martin Luther King equivalent among the mutants. He carries himself with grace, has a vision, and is prepared to champion it – though he tends to act cautiously when it comes to physical confrontations.

“Grammer noted that while Beast is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, he prefers not to engage in fights. If necessary, it would be ‘quick and decisive.’ In my opinion, ‘He’s a man who strives to do good and lives by it,’ and I admire that,” Grammer added. The character of Beast first appeared as The Wanted Man in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). He reappeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and the post-credits scene of The Marvels (2023). In the upcoming movie Doomsday, Grammer will portray the cherished character.

Beast Isn’t Usually The X-Men Character Compared With Martin Luther King Jr., But The Comparison Is Apt

It’s intriguing to note the comparisons drawn between Beast and Martin Luther King Jr., given that fans often see Professor X and Magneto as parallel figures to MLK and Malcolm X respectively. Indeed, there are striking similarities between Beast and the revered civil rights leader, both being intelligent and morally righteous leaders who champion justice and equality.

Beast, like King, stands firm in his convictions despite facing discrimination due to his physical appearance. He is a vocal proponent of peace, employing nonviolent methods even though he possesses superhuman agility, intellect, and combat skills. King too advocated for peaceful demonstrations during his fight for equality and human rights for African Americans.

Both Beast and King share the same ideals about embracing change through peace rather than force, and maintaining dignity in the face of adversity. Their shared vision is a testament to their unwavering commitment to justice and equality, regardless of the challenges they may encounter.

The depiction of Beast by Grammer has generally been met with favorable feedback from fans, who are eager to witness him in Avengers: Doomsday. His brief reappearance in The Marvels sparked enthusiasm, and his inclusion in the upcoming Avengers film is highly anticipated. Furthermore, it will be a nostalgic experience for X-Men fans as Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) and James Marsden (Cyclops) will join him in the highly anticipated MCU blockbuster.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026.
