Key Takeaways
- Scream 7 might have hinted at the killer early on.
- The idea of Sidney and Randy dating was entertained.
- Notable couples in the Scream franchise are discussed.
As a die-hard fan of the Scream franchise who has lived through every twist and turn since the very first scream echoed through the silver screen, I must say that the relationships in these movies have always been a highlight for me. Growing up with these characters, watching their romances blossom and crumble, was almost as exciting as waiting for the next Ghostface appearance.
I’ve been ready for Scream 7 ever since the end credits of Scream 6 rolled, and I’ve enjoyed every movie in the horror franchise. Like many slasher fans, I appreciate the humor that the franchise has, and I like how wise and strong final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is. I’m also a big fan of Kevin Williamson, who created the teen drama Dawson’s Creek and wrote Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4.
As a gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the insights from the legendary creator of Scream, Kevin Williamson. His thoughts on the latest installments are always intriguing, but it’s his reflections on earlier films that truly captivate me.
Kevin Williamson Answered A Question About Sidney Prescott And Randy Meeks Dating In Scream 2, And I Love This Idea
During an interview in 2022 with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Williamson was asked if he intended for the intelligent main character Sidney Prescott and Randy Meeks (portrayed by Jamie Kennedy) to start dating. In response, he shared:
I assumed he’d always have a crush on her, given their friendship dynamic. It seemed like he was the one with feelings for her, but they were intended to remain friends all along.
Williamson mentioned that Kennedy and Campbell consulted the renowned horror filmmaker Wes Craven for his opinion, and Craven chose to defer to Williamson. The creator further commented: (This version maintains the flow of information and keeps the emphasis on the deference made by Craven.)
Indeed, he takes a liking to it, yet both he and she are aware that such an occurrence is unlikely. However, there’s a playful dynamic between them, where he often flirts with her and she tolerates it. After their first film experience together, they have formed a strong bond. I believe at this point, they could be considered as more than just colleagues or friends.
In my opinion, much like Williamson, I’ve always had a soft spot for the character of Randy, and I can’t help but feel sad that Sidney and he never got a chance at a romantic connection in the Scream series. Although her love life wasn’t the main focus of her storyline, it would have been delightful to witness her in a fulfilling relationship during Scream 2. While Sidney did date Derek Feldman (Jerry O’Connell), I found him less compelling compared to Randy. Considering that she was pursued by the psychotic Ghostface Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in Scream, a kind-hearted individual like Randy would have been a fitting match for her.
As smart as I think Randy is, I do think he should have died in Scream 2 as it proves how dangerous Ghostface is. And it would have been devastating if Sidney had lost someone who she was in love with. But at the same time, I think if these two characters were in a relationship, then Randy’s death would have been even more impactful.
In “Scream 2,” we get another thrilling installment, yet I found Sidney appearing somewhat isolated. She develops new relationships at college, adding an enjoyable touch, and her old friend Randy provides support. However, a romantic dynamic between them would have been delightful, even if just hinted at in a few friendly scenes throughout the movie. This could have introduced some needed light-heartedness and enjoyment to the plot.
Who Are The Most Famous Couples In The Scream Franchise?
In the Scream movies, one of the most significant romantic relationships is between Sidney and Detective Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey). Before Sidney starts suspecting him as a potential killer, they have tension due to his persistent pursuit for intimacy that goes beyond what she’s comfortable with. Another notable pair from the series is Sidney and Billy in the first film. Fans were introduced to the budding relationship between Sidney and Detective Kincaid in Scream 3, but it was cut short as they missed out on much of their courtship and relationship development. It would be great if Dempsey returns for Scream 7 to give fans a glimpse into where their relationship stands now. I appreciate that the earlier movies allowed us to witness them getting to know each other better, but I hope the upcoming slasher sequel delves deeper into their courtship and romantic history.
In the Scream series, the duo of Gale Weathers, portrayed by Courteney Cox, and Dewey Riley, played by David Arquette, holds significant importance. Their bond shines brightly in the first film, leading them on an emotional rollercoaster that encompasses falling in love, getting married, grappling with everyday struggles, and ultimately ending in a heart-wrenching divorce by the fifth installment. Despite their separation by the time of Dewey’s unfortunate demise in Scream (2022), they remain deeply connected, often preoccupied with each other’s wellbeing.
A memorable duo from the movie “Scream” consists of Stu Macher (portrayed by Matthew Lillard) and Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan). While Stu tends to be more lighthearted, Tatum is tougher, sarcastic, and quick-witted. They make an unusual pair, adding a unique dynamic to the film. Reflecting on the romantic pairs in “Scream”, I’d argue that Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) were the most compelling couple. Recalling his untimely passing brings a fresh wave of sadness once more.
