Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 director “really proud” the gay romance he pushed for, which is somehow totally different to “woke” games’ representation, is up for awards

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has been nominated for awards by Gayming Magazine for how it depicts a possible romantic relationship between the characters Henry and Hans. Daniel Vávra, the game’s creative director – who is currently working on a Kingdom Come movie and has previously made controversial statements related to GamerGate – recently tweeted about the nominations.

He expressed pride in the portrayal of the Hans/Henry relationship in Deliverance 2, emphasizing its respectful and authentic approach. He highlighted that it developed naturally, without force, and provided an educational glimpse into medieval life – avoiding both romanticization and preachy messaging, a contrast to what he considers overly didactic content labeled as ‘woke’ by many.

We aimed to create a welcoming experience for LGBTQ+ players, allowing them to authentically represent themselves within the game, similar to the choices we’ve offered other players. Most people who weren’t interested likely didn’t even notice, though a small, vocal minority did. I championed this feature, taking full responsibility for the decision and persuading the team to implement it. However, that doesn’t mean I approve of the excessive and often unwelcome emphasis on ‘wokeness’ that’s become common in entertainment.

He’s been responding to nearly every comment on the post, even getting into a disagreement with someone claiming to be Tony Soprano. This person believes the relationship between Henry and Hans in the game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was added due to pressure from an unknown investor at Embracer Group.

It’s strange to see Vávra trying to distance himself from being labeled “woke” after Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 won awards for its well-done gay romance. This feature has been a big success for the game and its players, yet he keeps insisting it’s different from the kind of LGBTQ+ representation in games he dislikes. Essentially, he’s protesting that something positive for his game isn’t “woke” enough to criticize.

The debates surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its sequel, particularly the ‘woke’ versus ‘anti-woke’ arguments, are incredibly complex and have been written about extensively. However, it often seems like these arguments aren’t about genuine disagreement, but rather someone trying to avoid appearing inconsistent with their pre-existing biases. This particular instance feels driven by a need to take credit for something, likely to boost their own ego.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the Hans/Henry relationship in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – well done on the award nominations!
