In the sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the game’s commitment to realism and immersion is so strong that it mirrors my ineptitude in actual combat. Unlike other RPGs where I can flee when enemies are overpowered, in this game, I’m dodging everyone regardless of their level.
Affirmative, guards are present. Bandits? Yep, too. Wolves as well, no question. And I might add, I’m dodging strays as well. Since I graduated from the extended tutorial and entered the open world, I’ve had very few skirmishes mandated by quests, and every time I lost before eventually prevailing. If you let your guard down, Henry becomes a meal for the people of Skalitz. It reminds me of… well, it feels like what it truly would feel like to engage in sword fights during the Middle Ages. Victory isn’t guaranteed. Pick a fight with the wrong adversary and your head will be displayed on a pike.
Going Back To (Very Basic) Basics
Although I appreciate the philosophy behind it, I must admit that I’m struggling to enjoy the game. Whenever I need to confront an enemy, my understanding of Hans’ lessons and Tomcat’s swordmaster techniques seem to disappear as quickly as old memories. In simpler terms, I find myself forgetting crucial information during combat situations.
As a devoted gamer, I’ve found myself at odds with this game due to its maddeningly cryptic nature. During one of those tutorials with Tomcat, I followed his instructions meticulously, yet failed repeatedly to execute the combo move. The Steam forums were filled with similar complaints, with some players offering their own strategies or video demonstrations by YouTubers. However, many continued to struggle even after trying these tips. Unfortunately, I found myself in that same predicament, and it wasn’t until a stroke of luck that I managed to pull off the combo successfully. To this day, I remain baffled as to how I achieved it or how to replicate it consistently.
Although I’m not entirely assured about my ability in sword fighting, it seems that even if I were more proficient, the game might not notice much difference. It’s unclear whether I’m making mistakes or if the game is merely perceiving them as such. Nevertheless, this uncertainty has led me to approach the game’s mechanics with great care. I’m constantly on the lookout for any advantage I can find. My quest is for superior weaponry. I’m honing my sword, perfecting my parries, scrutinizing my thrusts, and rehearsing my dagger techniques meticulously.
I’m Afraid Of Everything All The Time
In addition to other factors, my fear about my sword adds to the sensation that Bohemia is conspiring against me. Playing as Henry is akin to being overly anxious about health issues. I’m constantly on edge, anticipating an unforeseen problem. Earlier, I didn’t eat enough, and now my sight is hazy. Seems like I should consume all the edibles in my stockpile! What a nightmare to discover one of those items gave me food poisoning, necessitating a Digestive Potion or else I might perish. Can you believe it? I’m miles away from the nearest Alchemist Bench! Do you have any clue about how distant it is?

The challenging nature of combat in this game underscores just how unforgiving the world can be. In many games, I can bypass a lot of additional mechanics because I am confident in my ability to grasp the fundamental actions. In Cyberpunk 2077, you don’t necessarily have to delve into crafting if you consistently acquire new weapons. If you are proficient with gunplay – and firing in Cyberpunk operates much like it does in any other shooting game – then you should find success.
In a fresh and innovative manner, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series is redefining even fundamental aspects of gameplay. What was once mindless is now requiring constant consideration. Could this be an accurate portrayal of Medieval Bohemia’s daily life? Was there a persistent sense of fear in every corner? If so, bravo to the creators for successfully immersing us into that era.
