Obsidian Entertainment’s newest game, The Outer Worlds 2, came out in late October 2025, and many players have already completed it. Daniel Vavra, the director of both Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, is one of those players, and he recently shared his opinions about it on X.
Vavra generally agreed with the positive reviews the game received, even while pointing out specific flaws. He rated The Outer Worlds 2 a 7 out of 10 and then offered some strong criticism.
What’s really disappointing is that despite having 15 years and the resources of Microsoft, the team behind my favorite games (Fallout and New Vegas) hasn’t been able to innovate with a single new gameplay element. They haven’t managed to build on their successful, but now outdated, formula.
Honestly, playing The Outer Worlds felt a little… familiar. I was trying to think of one new gameplay thing it brought to the table, but everything seemed like it came straight from Deus Ex or the original Fallout games – stuff we were enjoying over 25 years ago! I’m craving a game world that truly feels alive, where things aren’t just happening on rails. I want real choices that matter, not just more loot to find, tunnels to crawl through, loading screens, and endless grinding in a world that feels pre-determined. Give me something truly dynamic!
Just to clarify, Obsidian Entertainment only directly developed Fallout: New Vegas. The earlier Fallout games the director mentioned were actually created by the same people who now work at Obsidian, but when they were at Black Isle Studios. Also, The Outer Worlds 2 won’t have loot boxes; the creator was probably just talking about loot boxes in video games generally when they brought them up.
This discussion highlights a potential concern for the leadership at Obsidian Entertainment and Microsoft. The lack of innovative gameplay features, as noted by the director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance regarding The Outer Worlds 2, could be a result of Microsoft’s cautious approach to game development. After Microsoft acquired Obsidian in 2018, they may have encouraged this more conservative style. While this is just speculation, it offers a possible explanation for the questions raised by Daniel Vavra.
