Kingdom Hearts 4 is Heading Towards the Conclusion of the Series, Says Game Director

As a long-time fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, the news about Kingdom Hearts 4 has me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, the announcement that the game is intended to move towards the conclusion of the series has me eagerly anticipating the final chapter in Sora’s epic journey. But on the other hand, the news that Tetsuya Nomura plans to retire in a few years has me wondering if we’ll ever get to see the end of this story.

Tetsuya Nomura, the game director for Kingdom Hearts 4, has expressed that they’ve created this new edition with the aim of moving towards the final chapter in the series narrative.

In a recent conversation with Young Jump (through aitaikimochi on X), Tetsuya Nomura shared his thoughts about Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link, describing them as brand-new entries instead of follow-ups. According to him, he wished to start the narrative anew after Kingdom Hearts 3, leading the team to introduce new writers and modernize the logo to make it simpler for novices to jump into the series.

In a conversation with Young Jump, Nomura expresses that instead of viewing Kingdom Hearts IV and Missing Link as mere sequels, he envisions them as fresh installments in the series. Following the conclusion of Kingdom Hearts III, he wished to reboot the narrative, which led to the hiring of new writers and a modification of the logo for clarity.

When queried regarding Kingdom Hearts 4, Tetsuya Nomura expressed his intention to step down from active work within a few years. This has sparked interest among fans as to whether his departure might occur prior to the conclusion of the Kingdom Hearts series. Yet, he made it clear that Kingdom Hearts 4 is designed to eventually progress toward wrapping up the storyline.

Regarding the plot development for Kingdom Hearts 4, Tetsuya mentioned, “If you’re familiar with how Kingdom Hearts 3 concludes, Sora appears differently in the ending due to our intention to reboot the story. This move makes it simpler for newcomers to jump right into KH4 without needing prior knowledge.” He further added that long-time series fans might think, “Ah, this is how it goes,” when they start the new game, but this approach ensures both existing and new players can enjoy the Kingdom Hearts 4 experience.
