Kingdom Hearts 4 Teases Major Return with Playable Mickey and New Secrets

After a considerable wait, Square Enix has lastly updated fans about the ongoing developments in the world of Kingdom Hearts, and the news presents both good and bad aspects. A sneak peek at Kingdom Hearts 4 was unveiled, showcasing various gameplay details, offering a glimpse into how the user interface, visuals, and new enemy designs are progressing. Conversely, after multiple previews and closed trials, Kingdom Hearts Missing Link, initially intended for mobile devices, has been terminated before its release. The reappearance of Kingdom Hearts 4 following years of silence is undeniably encouraging, but there remains a tinge of melancholy to this latest round of updates.

Without a doubt, the highly anticipated sequel, Kingdom Hearts 5, is coming soon, and various aspects are gradually being revealed. Post the occurrences of Kingdom Hearts 3, our protagonist Sora continues to be ensnared in the surreal realm of Quadratum. Interestingly, the believed deceased Strelitzia from Kingdom Hearts Union Cross mysteriously appears alongside him. Dark forces have trailed Sora, accompanied by several more enigmatic figures wearing black cloaks. The finale of Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory hints at Riku’s arrival as well. The specific roles these characters will play in Kingdom Hearts 5 are still unclear, but one cherished series character appears set to reclaim his glory days: Mickey Mouse.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Has Plans For Mickey Mouse

In mid-May 2025, Square Enix unveiled images for the upcoming game, Kingdom Hearts 4. While these screenshots didn’t reveal much detail, one image in particular holds significant consequences. Since the end of KH3 and the events of Melody of Memory, Sora’s companions have been searching through all accessible worlds for any signs of him. It’s not just Riku whose path has become clear; Kairi is resuming her Keyblade training under Master Aqua, Donald and Goofy appear to be visiting Hades in the Olympus Underworld in the trailer for KH4, and King Mickey is making a return trip to a new yet important location.

Mickey’s KH4 Plot Involves One Of KH’s Most Enigmatic Worlds

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that I’m about to step into Scala ad Caelum’s Keyblade Academy – a place with a rich history in the Kingdom Hearts universe. Although it was only briefly featured in Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, this academy holds immense significance as it’s where Master Eraqus, Master Xehanort, and a substantial number of Keyblade initiates received their training. Delving deeper into this place could potentially uncover hidden secrets about Quadratum and the ongoing storyline involving the Foretellers. It’s not surprising that Mickey would want to explore more, but what takes me aback is the possibility that players might be joining him on this journey!

King Mickey Could Be Playable Again In Kingdom Hearts 4

Playing As Mickey Is A Rare Treat In KH

A single image of the forthcoming game, Kingdom Hearts 4, has surfaced, featuring Mickey Mouse precariously positioned on a row of suspended chandeliers within what seems to be a library. The perspective from behind Mickey hints at potential in-game interaction. Such revelation is significant because Mickey Mouse’s playable status in Kingdom Hearts is uncommon and distinguished. Since Kingdom Hearts 3 ReMind, this has not occurred, with the exception being a heavily scripted sequence detached from regular gameplay. The only other instances of Mickey being directly controllable were as a backup option in Kingdom Hearts 2 and as a hidden character in 358/2 Days.

Including King Mickey as a playable character in regular gameplay for Kingdom Hearts 4 is quite significant, and it’s an honor that this game can accommodate and showcase him. The return of manual platforming, scarcely seen since Dream Drop Distance introduced Flowmotion, suggests some minor enemy encounters as players guide Mickey through Scala ad Caelum, creating a comprehensive Mickey playthrough experience. It’s exciting to see Kingdom Hearts 4 extending its efforts to incorporate the series’ characters while taking them on unanticipated journeys, and I hope the prospect of another playable Mickey Mouse adventure lives up to his previous feats.
