Highlights
- Kingdom Hearts 4’s Quadratum resembles Tokyo’s Shibuya, sparking hope for a crossover with The World Ends with You characters.
- Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has clarified that Quadratum is not the same Shibuya found in TWEWY.
- Nevertheless, the use of Shibuya’s imagery and the recent TWEWY sequel inspires hope for The World Ends with You characters in Kingdom Hearts 4.
As a dedicated fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the worlds of both Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends with You, I must admit that the recent revelations about Quadratum in Kingdom Hearts 4 have my heart racing with anticipation. The prospect of Neku Sakuraba and his pals from TWEWY joining forces with Sora once again is a dream long nurtured by fans like myself – a dream that seems to be edging closer to reality with each passing day.
The Kingdom Hearts series, known for merging diverse worlds and combining characters, has sparked curiosity about potential expansions with the unveiling of Kingdom Hearts 4’s Quadratum. Previous installments have preserved a style that combines cartoon and anime aesthetics, yet interacts with live-action elements. However, Kingdom Hearts 4 is pushing boundaries by introducing a more realistic hub world, modeled after the real-life Shibuya district of Tokyo. This has given rise to speculation about the possible comeback of a beloved character who was previously thought to be unlikely.
Neku Sakuraba, the main character from The World Ends with You, joined forces with other characters from the same game in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. In this collaboration, they played crucial roles in Sora’s adventure. This was the first time Tetsuya Nomura’s acclaimed TWEWY had intersected with KH, but it appeared to be a unique scenario not linked to future installments. However, when Neku said “See you in Shibuya” to Sora during their farewell, there’s a chance that this hint could materialize in the forthcoming fourth main series title.
Quadratum’s Resemblance to Other Game Settings Pushed Tetsuya Nomura to Comment on Future Crossovers
Initially, fans of both series were thrilled by the striking similarity between Quadratum and Shibuya, as depicted in TWEWY. Many believed that the change of setting for the Lost Master Arc might bring Sora together with characters like Neku and Shiki. However, this idea was later dismissed by the series creator. In a 2022 interview with Famitsu, translated by Kingdom Hearts Insider, Nomura clarified that the Shibuya of Quadratum is not identical to its portrayal in other Square Enix projects.
To put it simply, the world in “Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins” differs significantly from that of The World Ends With You’s Shibuya. While some fans speculate a link between TWEWY and this game, there is no concrete evidence to support such a connection.
The fact that Quadratum isn’t connected to any past versions of Shibuya in Square Enix games might have put a damper on expectations for a cross-over involving this setting, but it also means these are distinct realities within a larger multiverse. With the reality-warping storyline of Kingdom Hearts, it’s not impossible that characters from TWEWY might still show up. Intricate plots often create conditions for cross-overs that don’t seem logical at first, and Quadratum could provide the ideal backdrop for a more sophisticated reintroduction.
The World Ends With You Characters in Kingdom Hearts 4 Would Still Be a Dream Come True for Some Fans
Over time, the number of fans for TWEWY has grown significantly, making the idea of Neku and his companions returning even more exciting. The sequel, NEO: The World Ends with You, did a great job of continuing the original story while also modernizing it. It introduced a new set of characters along with updated designs for the original ones. Since Sora has evolved since his last encounter with Neku’s group, seeing them meet again would emphasize the growth that both casts have experienced over time.
Regardless of whether Shibuya in Quadratum resembles the one from TWEWY or not, having these characters return in Kingdom Hearts might make them worth including. They could appear as they did originally, or in their NEO: TWEWY forms, or even as new versions designed for the intricate world of Kingdom Hearts 4. Such a reappearance would echo strongly with fans who follow Tetsuya Nomura’s entire body of work. As Sora journeys through the unfamiliar landscape of Unreality, encountering displaced characters like himself could be one of the most thrilling moments offered by Kingdom Hearts 4.
