Kingdom Hearts: Heartless vs. Nobodies – The Ultimate Showdown

The Kingdom Hearts series has solidified itself as one of gaming’s iconic action-RPG franchises, and it’s easy to understand why. Debuting on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, Kingdom Hearts captivated audiences with its unique blend of Square (later Square Enix) and Disney characters and worlds. At that time, nothing else in gaming was quite like it, and while crossovers have become more prevalent since then, the fusion of Square Enix and Disney settings into a fresh concept hasn’t been duplicated. With over ten games under its belt and more on the horizon, Kingdom Hearts and its distinctive style show no signs of disappearing.

While it’s often the familiar Disney characters and stories that initially attract players to Kingdom Hearts, it’s the unique elements introduced within the series that keep fans engaged. Characters like Sora, Riku, Kairi, Xehanort, and others give depth to the storyline. Although some may argue that the intricate Kingdom Hearts narrative detracts from the engaging fusion of worlds, the series owes its distinctive identity to its original heroes and their adversaries, such as the recurring Heartless and Nobodies.

Heartless And Nobodies Are Names To Know In Kingdom Hearts

In the world of Kingdom Hearts, even gamers not part of the Kingdom Hearts fandom are often acquainted with the mischievous Shadows, a significant portion of the Heartless army, and the legendary Organization XIII composed of Nobodies. Although the primary antagonists differ among games, Shadows and Nobodies are typically the first and second most encountered enemy groups in Kingdom Hearts. Rank-and-file Nobodies weren’t introduced until Kingdom Hearts 2, but despite their frequent appearances as villains and shared history, Heartless and Nobodies aren’t allies.

What Kingdom Hearts’ Heartless And Nobodies Really Are

In the world of Kingdom Hearts, one could say that Heartless and Nobodies together form an entire character. Heartless signify what’s left of a heart plunged into darkness, while Nobodies represent the body and soul that drift into a realm that exists beyond both light and darkness. Nobodies show intelligence, can utilize Final Fantasy-like classes, and exhibit better organization, whereas Heartless are characterized by their wild nature but compensate with sheer numbers and some extremely potent high-level members. Although they stem from the same origin, they are distinct entities, capable of working together under a powerful leader, but each possesses unique traits.

Breaking Down What Separates Kingdom Hearts’ Heartless And Nobodies

Kingdom Hearts Explores Heartless’ Darkness And Nobodies’ Nothingness In Different Ways

As a gamer, I can break down the Heartless from Kingdom Hearts into two main categories: naturally occurring Pureblood Heartless and artificially created Emblem Heartless. The Pureblood Heartless encompass common Shadows, along with more powerful entities such as Invisibles. On the other hand, the Emblem Heartless are produced by a machine designed by Ansem the Wise and his disciples. These Emblem Heartless usually fall somewhere between the weakest and strongest Pureblood Heartless. Interestingly, the strength of Nobodies is determined by their former self’s willpower while they were still whole. The leadership among the Nobodies are members of Organization XIII who appear human, but the leader of the Emblem Heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, shares a similar humanoid and willful form.

In contrast to each other, despite sharing a similar existence, Heartless and Nobodies have distinct purposes. While Heartless blindly follow powerful, corrupt entities under Organization XIII, Nobodies exhibit individuality. The Organization’s declared intention is to restore its members’ hearts and emotions by recreating Kingdom Hearts; however, the leader Xemnas has ulterior motives. Characters like Axel and the Castle Oblivion team have personal objectives, and it’s revealed that Nobodies can regain their hearts through various means. At the minimum, this flawed group is a preferable alternative to the Kingdom Hearts universe being consumed by eternal darkness at the hands of the Heartless.
