We have a new update on the *Death Stranding* movie! It seems the film will tell an original story, separate from the events of the popular video games. While many details are still a mystery, it’s confirmed the movie won’t simply retell what happens in the games.
The movie adaptation of the post-apocalyptic game series from Kojima Productions was first revealed in December 2022. Michael Sarnoski signed on to write and direct the film. He’s previously directed two feature films: the 2021 drama *Pig*, starring Nicolas Cage, and the 2024 horror film *A Quiet Place: Day One*, which stars Lupita Nyong’o.
Death Stranding Film Will Feature an Original Story
At the September 23rd event celebrating Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary, Sarnoski shared updates about the upcoming *Death Stranding* movie. He explained that the film won’t be a direct copy of the game’s story, but will instead feature a completely original narrative with new characters. According to IGN, Sarnoski said the team wants to capture the spirit and core ideas of the game while telling a fresh story and introducing audiences to characters they haven’t met before.
Allan Ungar, a Canadian filmmaker, is an executive producer on the upcoming Death Stranding movie. The project is a collaboration between Hammerstone Studios, led by Canadian producer Alex Lebovici, and Kojima Productions. While Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima is still heavily involved, he previously stated he wouldn’t be directing the film due to his busy schedule.
As a big fan of *Death Stranding*, I’ve been keeping an eye out for any news on the movie, but so far, there haven’t been any public casting calls. It seems like the project is still very early in development. From what I understand about making these kinds of sci-fi films, it usually takes a year and a half to three years just to get everything finished *after* they start seriously working on it. It could even take longer if they need a lot of special effects or do a lot of test screenings to get it just right, which I really hope they do!
With this project, our goal is to truly embody the spirit and core ideas of the game, while also presenting a fresh narrative and introducing new, unexplored characters.
A live-action *Death Stranding* film is in development, separate from a new animated project called *Death Stranding: Mosquito*. The animated film is being produced by A24 Films (known for *Everything Everywhere All at Once* and *The Lighthouse*) and directed by anime expert Hiroshi Miyamoto. Miyamoto describes *Mosquito* as the story of a character with a tentacle-like growth on his face, which he uses to drain something from his opponents – as shown in a short teaser. While there’s no release date yet, the announcement suggests production is moving forward, and a late 2026 or 2027 launch is plausible.
