Hideo Kojima is famous for making incredible games, but he also enjoys movies, hosting visitors at Kojima Productions, and has connections with many people in Hollywood. Despite all this, he still manages to stay informed and share his opinions online.
Recently, news spread about a Matrix video game that Hideo Kojima almost developed. He noticed all the reports and decided to share his perspective on what happened.
Kojima Finally Gives His Take On The Long-Rumored Matrix Game That Never Came To Life

Hideo Kojima recently revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he was surprised to learn how close he came to making a game inspired by The Matrix – a project he apparently wasn’t fully aware of at the time.
Kojima recently discovered, through social media, that the Wachowski sisters had apparently approached him about a potential Matrix game project way back in 1999. He was surprised because, despite the 26 years that have passed, no one had ever mentioned this conversation to him before.
He recalled emailing with Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the directors of The Matrix films, as they had a mutual connection. Several months later, he met them in person when they visited Japan for a movie promotion, but they didn’t discuss any game projects with him.
Kojima remembers meeting the Wachowski sisters three times. First, they did an interview with Famitsu in Shinjuku, and artist Geof Darrow joined the conversation. Later that day, they visited KONAMI’s headquarters where Kojima found them finishing a meeting with the head of the CS Division, Mr. Kitaue. He then joined them for about an hour-long chat, without needing an interpreter (Aki wasn’t present). He believes John Gaeta, the visual effects supervisor, was there too. That evening, at the premiere screening and party, he also met Joel Silver, but no one mentioned any potential work opportunities at that time.
It turns out Hideo Kojima’s account of why a Matrix game he was planning never happened agrees with recent reports. These reports state that Konami executive Kasumi Kitaue cancelled the project before it even began, because the company was already focused on developing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty – which is exactly what Kojima mentioned in his recent post.
He explained that he was completely swamped with work on Metal Gear Solid 2 at the time, so he likely wouldn’t have been able to take on the project immediately. However, he added that if someone had discussed it with him, they might have been able to find a solution.
