Recent updates in the legal battle between Krafton and the creators of Sunautica 2 reveal that Krafton’s CEO is alleged to have used ChatGPT and talked about potential company acquisitions in Slack conversations.
Krafton and the creators of Subnautica 2 are currently involved in a legal dispute. Krafton claims the founders left the project and quickly released it to get paid, while the founders allege they were unfairly fired to avoid a $250 million payment.
Krafton CEO Created a Secret Task Force Called ‘Project X’
IGN recently reported on new legal filings detailing accusations against Krafton CEO CH Kim made by the creators of Subnautica 2. These documents claim Kim was unhappy with Krafton’s purchase of Unknown Worlds, believing it was a poor investment that would hinder the company’s progress. The filings also allege Kim discussed a possible takeover with CFO Richard Yoon through Slack messages.
So, things got really messy. Apparently, the CEO formed this secret team – they called it ‘Project X’ – and their job was basically to either work out some kind of agreement with the original creators of the game about future earnings, or just straight-up buy them out. When the creators wouldn’t budge and refused to give in to what Krafton wanted, they decided to just go for it and take control.
The legal document reveals that Maria Park, Krafton’s head of corporate development, told CH Kim that even if they were fired for cause, they would likely still receive the earnout payment if sales targets were met. It also details how Krafton’s CEO used ChatGPT to explore options for avoiding this payment, but the AI responded that canceling the earnout would be challenging.
Documents indicate that Subnautica 2 was prepared for release, with multiple sources suggesting it was ready. Playtest data from May showed players were satisfied with the game, and a Krafton expert believed the planned 2025 release was ideal. According to Maria Park, the game could have launched as early as August, and Thiago Oliveria strongly advocated for an August launch. Krafton leadership couldn’t identify any employees who doubted the game’s readiness.
Krafton is asking employees if any would like to voluntarily leave the company following their shift in focus to artificial intelligence. There’s also controversy surrounding Subnautica 2’s creators, who claim the Krafton CEO used ChatGPT to avoid paying them a promised bonus.
