Krafton CEO On Why The Callisto Protocol Struggled

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but echo the sentiments expressed by Changhan “CH” Kim, CEO of Krafton. The Callisto Protocol, while visually stunning and narratively engaging, seemed to lack that essential “gameplay edge” that sets a game apart from its competitors.

In a recent interview, Krafton’s CEO, Changhan “CH” Kim, explained that The Callisto Protocol faced difficulties as it lacked a unique or distinctive aspect in its gameplay.

In a conversation with the Game Developer, Kim discussed how The Callisto Protocol is the inaugural AAA single-player game from the studio and the developer, Striking Distance. He mentioned that there had been some uncertainty within their team about whether the path they were choosing was the correct one.

He stated, “This game offers a captivating single-player storyline and boasts stunning visuals, making it an impressive sight to behold. However, the focus of the game lies primarily in its gameplay. From my experience with The Callisto Protocol, I’ve learned that gameplay always takes precedence.

“It could be the most high-quality game in the world, but if you don’t have a gameplay edge–if you can’t differentiate your gameplay from your competitors–it doesn’t work out. I was able to reaffirm that.”

As a dedicated gamer, I grasp the necessity of pushing boundaries and innovating gameplay to keep players engaged and ensure a game’s success. It’s all about delivering an immersive, fresh gaming experience that captures our imagination.

In his words, “These essential components enable unique gaming encounters within The Callisto Protocol. While it’s primarily a story-driven and solo player game, delivering an enjoyable gameplay experience is crucial, and these aspects are indispensable for achieving that.

Regarding future endeavors, Kim mentions that predicting what might succeed or fail in the market can be challenging. Nevertheless, Krafton and its collaborating developers plan to persistently experiment with innovative concepts.

He remarked that not every attempt will be successful, but perhaps someday we’ll produce another game like PUBG. This strategy seems more grassroots to me, as many large corporations aren’t pursuing it at the moment.
