KRAVEN THE HUNTER Mauled By Critics to the Surprise of No One

As a longtime fan who has seen my fair share of Spider-Man adventures, I must say I’m both amused and disheartened by Sony’s recent foray into the “Spider-verse without Spider-man.” The latest addition to this curious collection, Kraven the Hunter, has received a chilly reception from critics, with reviews that make Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web seem like cinematic masterpieces.

Critics‘ assessments of “Kraven” are in, and it seems they’re not impressed with Sony’s take on the Marvel universe. So far, only about 39% of reviews from Tomato Meter have been positive, giving “Kraven” a disappointing 15% approval rating.

According to ScreenRant, they are feeling annoyed. MovieWeb described the movie as average. Meanwhile, Collider didn’t hold back their criticism, labeling Kraven as a confusing blend of the questionable concept in Venom, the disjointed narrative of Morbius, and the puzzling technical issues found in Madame Web.

Sony’s Spider-verse Without Spider-Man

Let There Be Carnage” (2021), “Morbius” (2022), “Madame Web” (2024), and another Venom movie titled “The Last Dance” (2024) have all received less-than-stellar ratings, with scores below 60%. The lowest rated of these is “Madame Web,” scoring just 11%, while “Let There Be Carnage” reached a high of 57%. As for “Kraven,” its rating meets expectations.

Where is Spider-Man?

In the realm of popular cinema, Spider-Man can be found in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following a series of rights transactions. Since 1999, Sony has held the film rights for all aspects of Spider-Man, which they acquired for approximately $7 million. They produced the initial trilogy starring Tobey Maguire from 2001 to 2007. Later, they rebooted the series with the two Amazing Spider-Man films featuring Andrew Garfield from 2012 to 2014.

Back in 2015, Sony struck a deal with Marvel to include Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the outcome has been nothing short of sensational. Each MCU film starring Spider-Man has garnered rave reviews, left fans thrilled, and shattered (or established) box office records.

What’s next for Sony’s Spider-Verse?

As a gamer, I’m pondering what lies ahead now. After a long, tough solo journey spanning a decade, could Sony decide to pass the torch to Marvel and Kevin Feige? If box office numbers were everything, then maybe they would. But, the Sony universe has been raking it in at the box office. The total budget for the three Venom movies amounted to $350 million, but the worldwide earnings soared to nearly $2 billion! Even Madame Web managed to double its $100 million budget. So, who knows what’s next?

The success or failure of Kraven the Hunter might be decisive. If its earnings surpass twice its production cost, even with negative reviews, it’s likely that Sony won’t stop producing spin-offs. Conversely, if Kraven performs similarly to Madame Web, it could signal the end of an era, and we’ll know more after the weekend box office figures are revealed.
