As a longtime fan of Spider-Man comics, I have to say that it feels like we’ve been dancing around Kraven the Hunter for far too long now. It seems as if this iconic villain has been on the brink of making his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for what feels like an eternity.

Kraven the Hunter, one of Spider-Man’s formidable adversaries in Marvel Comics, has yet to find a suitable home in live-action films. The latest standalone movie featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the character marked the end of Sony’s Spider-Man universe, leaving behind a trail of unrealized potential for his initial cinematic appearance.

After encountering numerous setbacks and obstacles, Sony finally unveiled Kraven the Hunter, but unfortunately, it bombed at the box office. Critics haven’t been generous with their praise, even drawing parallels to Morbius and Madame Web. To add insult to injury, the Marvel Comics villain was initially planned for larger, immensely successful superhero movies.

The fourth film in the Spider-Man series directed by Sam Raimi featuring Tobey Maguire never made it to the big screen, leaving fans to lament the lost opportunity for various reasons. One such reason was the potential appearance of Kraven the Hunter in the movie. This prospect was even hinted at by director Sam Raimi during an interview with Rolling Stone when he was promoting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. If Kraven, played by Sergei Kravinoff, had been part of Spider-Man 4, he would have stood alongside villains like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Sandman as an iconic Spider-Man adversary, leaving a lasting impact on pop culture for generations to come.

I regretted not including Kraven the Hunter in our upcoming Spider-Man storyline; his matchup against Spider-Man has long been a dream of mine to witness unfold on the big screen. I believed it would add an extraordinary twist, given that Kraven is the epitome of a hunter, while Spider-Man is known for his acrobatic prowess in the skies.

The Sinister Six Introduction

Following the abandonment of Spider-Man 4, The Amazing Spider-Man films emerged, giving Kraven the Hunter a chance to feature in this reboot. Prior to the launch of the second movie, Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment unveiled a joint universe of Spidey villain movies, including Venom and the Sinister Six. Given that Kraven is one of the original members of the Sinister Six, it was only natural for him to appear in this sequel, as indicated by The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb during an interview with ComicBook.com in 2017.

Among these characters, Kraven particularly intrigues me. The Vulture, Octopus, and Mysterio all have their unique aspects, but Kraven stands out as quite fascinating to me. Additionally, Scorpion could also be appealing.

In reality, the conclusion of TASM subtly suggested the emergence of the Sinister Six featuring Harry Osborn (Green Goblin), Aleksei Sytsevich (Rhino), and Gustav Fiers (The Gentleman). Regrettably, Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man didn’t survive beyond two films. Subsequently, the plans for this franchise divided into two paths.

Spider-Man became part of the Marvel movies when Tom Holland was cast. Meanwhile, Sony created a separate Spider-Man world with films featuring Tom Hardy as Venom. This shared ownership between Sony and Marvel suggests that villains like Kraven the Hunter could eventually appear in future Marvel movies.

Kraven’s Unlikely Debut In Black Panther

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Kraven, typically a Spider-Man adversary, almost made his MCU debut in an unanticipated film other than one focused on the web-slinger. The visionary director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, initially intended to incorporate Kraven into the 2018 movie. Hardcore Black Panther fans might recall Christopher Priest’s comic series, which featured an exhilarating battle between the Spider-Man villain and the Wakandan hero. Regrettably, Coogler was unable to introduce Kraven in his film, either due to a rights dispute with Sony or possibly because Marvel had plans to present him in a future Tom Holland Spider-Man movie.

No Way Home Was Almost A Kraven Film

It might come as a shock to some Spider-Man enthusiasts that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” was initially planned as a movie where Peter Parker would face off against Kraven the Hunter, rather than the multi-villain extravaganza it ultimately became. Given that Vulture and Mysterio were the main antagonists in “Homecoming” and “Far From Home”, respectively, it’s understandable why director Jon Watts opted for a formidable adversary like Kraven for the third Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man film.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment yet again, as Kraven’s potential appearance seemed to slip through our fingers once more. The project was shelved due to Sony’s decision to create a standalone film for the villain instead. However, with Kevin Feige at the helm, I am confident that he wouldn’t let this opportunity pass by unnoticed, given the resounding success of No Way Home and the significant role the nostalgic gathering of older Spidey baddies played in its triumph.

Death Of The Sony Spider-Man Universe?

A few years down the line, the Sony Spider-Man universe appears to be struggling significantly. The recent release of ‘Kraven the Hunter’ received unfavorable critic and viewer feedback. This poor reception follows a series of challenges such as delayed releases, the SAG-AFTRA strike, the failures of ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’, and a waning audience interest due to these cumulative issues. Despite this, Sony and director J.C. Chandor had hoped that ‘Kraven the Hunter’ might still impress audiences with its quality, coming close to the standard set by the ‘Venom’ films.

Plans For A Second Kraven Film

However, it’s evident that things didn’t go as planned for Kraven the Hunter, given its disappointing $11.8 million domestic debut and a dismal 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Under better circumstances, this character could have easily starred in another film battling Spider-Man. As Director J.C. Chandor explained, these less than ideal results meant that the planned second Kraven film based on “Kraven’s Last Hunt” by J. M. DeMatteis, Mike Zeck, and Bob McLeod would not come to fruition as intended.

Although Aaron Taylor-Johnson and another interested party showed eagerness for a Sinister Six crossover movie, it appears that the future of this character might be coming to an end. However, with the potential for the Sony Spider-Man universe to persist, it’s been confirmed that Kraven the Hunter will likely be the final film in the franchise not focusing on Venom for the time being.
