Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess review

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess review

As a seasoned gamer with a deep appreciation for Japanese culture and immersive experiences, I’ve been utterly captivated by Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. This game has taken my breath away since the very beginning with its stunning visuals that seem to leap straight out of a traditional Japanese scroll painting.

I’m deeply drawn to games that immerse me completely in their elements, and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess surprised me by becoming one of my favorite games of 2024. I didn’t expect this Capcom title to make it to the top when we began the new year, but its engaging progression and gameplay, stunning visuals, strategic depth, and more have won me over. The combination of tower defense, thrilling combat, and role-playing makes it another Capcom game that I’ve become deeply enamored with.

In this game, you assume the role of Soh, a brave warrior dedicated to safeguarding Yoshiro, the divine Kagura dancer. From Mt. Kafuku’s peak to its base, you’ll face waves of malevolent beings called the Seethe, which have transformed the enchanting Japanese terrain into an ominous expanse of dark matter. Your objectives in each region involve securing Yoshiro’s safety, but Capcom keeps your adventure exciting by introducing fresh mechanics and level designs to keep you on your toes.

As a seasoned adventurer with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the journey ahead is unlike any other. The mountain before us is not just a mere obstacle to conquer, but a living entity that requires our utmost attention during both day and night cycles.

The Torii Gates represent your objective, and you must pass through them to advance to the next area or accomplish the level by cleansing them of impurities. Determine how far Yoshiro will journey each day to prepare for her Kagura dance. If you bring her too near the Torii Gate, she’ll be exposed when the gates open at night. A blue outline indicates successful passage during that particular cycle if you manage to get Yoshiro there in daytime. Otherwise, brace yourself for a fight using your preferred strategy.

As the sun sets and night falls in Kuntisu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, I notice something unusual. The Torii Gates begin to creak open, one at a time. Initially, it’s just a single gate, but as my progress advances, multiple gates open simultaneously. This is when the game kicks into high gear and the tension reaches its peak.

Woodcutters serve as an essential part of your labor force since they engage in melee combat effectively and are ideal for positioning near the gates. Archers and Marksmen, on the other hand, should be stationed at elevated spots to attack from a distance and eliminate Seethe that pose a threat from above. Sumo Wrestlers act as robust warriors, drawing out Seethe and diverting their attention away from other villagers. Spearmen excel in taking down stronger enemies, even though they are slower in movement. Certain roles can retrieve treasures from levels during the daytime, such as the Thief; however, they cannot be employed for combat at night.

As a gamer immersed in Kunitsu-Gami, I’m always amazed by the diverse roles available to me and how intricately designed the levels are, keeping my strategic thinking on its toes. Switching up villager positions comes in handy during tough situations, but be prepared for some close calls when it comes to healing them. Each role is capable of leveling up and gaining power as we advance, adding another dimension to the game’s strategy. Though my villagers hold their own against the Seethe, I’m the one bearing the brunt of the work when it comes to engaging the enemy.

In the game Kuntisu-Gami, as the character Soh, you initially possess a limited repertoire of attacks against your enemies. However, over time, you’ll have the opportunity to enhance Soh’s moveset, introducing more potent strikes and the option to employ a bow for ranged assaults. The experience of controlling Soh in Kuntisu-Gami is truly captivating, as you’re consistently on the move, assessing your next target, while keeping Yoshiro’s safety in mind. A notification will alert you when an enemy approaches perilously close to her. In order to make it through the night and reach the Torri Gate, ensuring Yoshiro’s survival is crucial.

As a gamer, I can tell you that two significant elements in my gaming arsenal drastically influence my gameplay experience. Firstly, Mazo Talismans are abundant and come with various attachable abilities. For instance, one might accelerate my carpenter’s trap-building process, make defilement discovery more effortless, grant workers extra health, or boost attack power. Secondly, Tsuba Guards are another game-changer, which I can equip on Soh. These guards offer an array of abilities for Soh as well, such as unleashing a powerful additional attack, momentarily increasing the strength of my worker’s attacks, or teleporting me instantly to Yoshiro’s location.

In each new area, you’ll encounter fierce battles with various enemy types. Some soar through the sky and contaminate your villagers, rendering them helpless until you eliminate these airborne adversaries. Others can prevent you from using your special abilities. And there are still those colossal monsters that deal massive damage when they get close. After clearing the Torii Gates in many levels, an ominous presence emerges, signaling a major boss fight. Capcom keeps things interesting by introducing different enemies, each with its unique set of attacks.

As a gamer, I can tell you that each battle is challenging, but the rewards are worth it. You’ll earn a new mask and assume a fresh role, making future levels more engaging and exciting. Not every level will involve opening Torii Gates with your villagers. Instead, you might find yourself battling Seethe in the waters, which can sink your boats and decimate your fleet. In another level, you’ll face the challenge of going it alone without any villagers, relying solely on your fighting skills to survive. The game keeps presenting new challenges, but the rewards for your efforts never cease.

In Monster Hunter titles by Capcom, there are moments of respite between missions where I get to craft my armor and unwind. Each base we set up in these areas rewards us with perks as we assign our workers for laborious tasks. Additionally, there’s a tent where I can interact with the goddess, upgrade my team members, exchange my Tsuba Guards (special abilities), admire stunning scrolls depicting our adventures and significant battles, and even offer Yoshiro a tasty treat to munch on.

Experiencing the Seethe battles, admiring Yoshiro’s dance performance, basking in the scenic mountain vistas, and appreciating the intricate boss designs in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a feast for the eyes. Capcom has skillfully infused Japanese culture into every aspect of this game, resulting in a visually stunning experience. This game stands out as one of the most beautiful titles I’ve come across this year, and its availability on Game Pass from day one is an added bonus. I highly recommend it to anyone, including those who weren’t initially interested. The gameplay is kept engaging with constant variations, and challenges both Soh in combat and your management skills when overseeing workers.

Kunitsu-Gami: The Goddess’s Journey is an engaging game that masterfully blends various genres with originality and flair. It continuously challenges expectations and alters perspectives from one realm to another. Battles remain enjoyable, though focusing on waves of adversaries may feel slightly inconvenient at times, yet the diverse abilities offered keep things intriguing. The visuals are stunning, strategic components add depth to each level, and every circumstance presents new obstacles to overcome.
