As a long-time fan who’s witnessed the evolution of Dragon Ball from its humble beginnings to its current glory, I can confidently say that the Tournament of Power stands as one of the most exhilarating arcs in the series. The build-up, the epic battles, and the moments of triumph were nothing short of spectacular. It was truly a treat to see characters like Master Roshi and Gohan shine after being sidelined for so long.

In shonen anime like Dragon Ball, tournament storylines serve as a vibrant platform for introducing multiple characters and offering engaging battles and confrontations. These events allow viewers to witness various strong teams and standalone figures progressing through their respective matches, culminating in the most thrilling encounters. It’s worth noting that the tournament arcs in Dragon Ball have gained iconic status among fans, often standing out as memorable highlights of the series.

Engaging with the incredibly powerful combatants from this series as they unveil higher levels of might to crush their adversaries is a thrilling experience. Although the concept of a tournament arc seemed to be left behind in Dragon Ball Z (except for the Cell Games), fans of original Dragon Ball were pleased to discover that Super reintroduced numerous tournament arcs, offering intriguing storylines to explore. Some tournaments throughout the series have been colossal and can be challenging to comprehend fully.

5 Tournament Of Destroyers

Total Number Of Fighters: 10

  • Winner: Monaka & Universe 7

As a passionate gamer, let me recount an epic clash between Champa and Beerus, two deities who rule their respective gaming worlds. They got into a heated debate about whose universe was supreme, and to settle the score, they made a bet. If their strongest warriors won in a head-to-head match, they would gain control of the Super Dragon Balls and Universe 7’s Earth. This escalated into an exhilarating tournament arc, where Beerus manipulated the situation using Monaka to push Goku beyond his comfort zone, a challenge he eagerly accepted and ultimately surpassed.

Characters like Frost and Cabba are intriguing, with a delightful twist, as they resemble their counterparts from Universe 7. However, the true highlight becomes the epic clash between Goku and Hit, a fight destined for timeless memory. Hit’s Time-Skip ability is as deceptive as it gets, and Goku unveils his Super Saiyan Blue form combined with Kaio-ken to disrupt Hit’s strategy. This leads to an extraordinary duel between brute force and tactical prowess that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Eventually, after urging Hit to defy divinity in a way unique to him, Hit feigns Monaka’s immense strength and concedes the match, allowing Universe 7 to secure victory.

4 Cell Games

Total Number Of Fighters: 19

  • Winner: Gohan & Earth

The rise of Perfect Cell is one of the most foreboding moments in anime history, with his need for theatrics and showing off his power compelling this iconic villain to announce the Cell Games, where the fate of Earth hangs in the balance. The Z Warriors train as hard as possible to take on this massive threat, but it’s clear that Goku is the only one powerful enough to take on Cell. However, it was clear that he saw something in his son and tagged out to let Gohan take on Cell at full strength.

As Gohan battles Perfect Cell, the villain not only beats him mercilessly but also makes matters worse by producing seven Cell Juniors and destroying their healing Senzu Beans. Following Android 16’s fatal encounter, Gohan reaches his limit and transforms into a more powerful Super Saiyan form, determined to teach Perfect Cell a lesson. However, the thrill of combat clouds Gohan’s judgment, causing him to act impulsively and sustain a grievous injury on one arm while attempting to save Vegeta. Fortunately, he perseveres and engages in an epic energy blast duel with a stronger version of Cell, ultimately annihilating every single cell of the bio-android for good.

3 Tournament Of Power

Total Number Of Fighters: 80

  • Winner: Android 17 & Universe 7

As a dedicated gamer, it felt right that Dragon Ball Super would culminate with one of the most thrilling tournament arcs ever in anime history. The lead-up to the Tournament of Power might have taken some time, but the wait was definitely worth it. We got to enjoy an abundance of epic battles and moments that were truly a joy to experience. To see veterans like Master Roshi and Gohan get their moment in the limelight after years of being on the bench is incredible, but what stands out most from this 80-man tournament is the gradual tension building up to the face-off between Goku and Jiren.

Following a partially mastered version of Ultra Instinct, Goku repeatedly challenges Jiren’s strength. Eventually, they enter a fierce battle that pushes Goku to his utmost capacity. He eventually unlocks his full potential and transforms into the Ultra Instinct form, making quick work of Jiren. However, the power of this form proves too much for him, leading to his incapacitation as his energy depletes. This unexpectedly brings about a collaboration with Frieza, where both fatigued fighters join forces to knock out Jiren in any way possible. As a result, Android 17 becomes the lone representative of Universe 7 who ensures their victory.

2 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament

Total Number Of Fighters: 182

  • Winner: Tien Shinhan & Crane School

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the thrilling World Martial Arts Tournaments in Dragon Ball, where Goku and Krillin, proud pupils of the Turtle School, strive to uphold their honor. In one such exhilarating tournament, we found ourselves squaring off against the formidable students of the Crane school, with Tien and Chiaotzu standing out as its top contenders.

It was revealed that Tien had been compelled to think for others rather than himself, which filled him with shame when he discovered his master had manipulated Chiaotzu into immobilizing Goku using his psychic abilities. This revelation prompted Tien to change his ways and fight with honor, resulting in an awe-inspiring battle against Goku. In the end, it was just a stroke of good fortune that allowed Tien to emerge victorious from this fierce encounter.

1 25th World Martial Arts Tournament

Total Number Of Fighters: 229 (194 Adults, 35 Juniors)

  • Winner: Mr. Satan

As a gamer immersed in the Dragon Ball universe, I find myself drawn into the tranquil narrative of the Peaceful World Saga. Here, Goku, my beloved character, returns to meet his family from beyond the veil and attends the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament. The preliminary Junior Tournament is a lively spectacle showcasing Goten and Trunks, but the atmosphere takes a darker turn once the main tournament begins. Trouble brews as Majin Buu’s minions make their unwelcome appearance.

After a brutal assault on Videl, Gohan displays his Super Saiyan 2 transformation, but his power is drained by Babidi’s minions to aid Majin Buu’s revival. The tournament takes a backseat as the Z Warriors, along with the Supreme Kai, investigate this new menace. Meanwhile, Goten and Trunks pose as adult fighters and engage Android 18 in an entertaining bout. However, Android 18 coerces Mr. Satan to pay her a large sum of money by throwing the fight and safeguarding his reputation.
