Last of Us Part 2 on PC Struggles To Beat PS4 Performance in Some Ways

Digital Foundry recently published a comprehensive technical analysis for the newly launched PC version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Although it’s considered an upgrade over the previous PC release of The Last of Us Part I, many still feel that it could have been even better.

Compared to what you’d typically expect, The Last of Us Part II on PC doesn’t outperform the original PlayStation 4 console that was released in 2013 by a significant margin in certain areas. For example, Digital Foundry discovered that even a GPU with over three times the power of the base PS4’s couldn’t consistently double the game’s performance on the PlayStation 4.

In The Weeds

Digital Foundry’s in-depth technical analysis of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC is incredibly detailed. Spanning a full fifteen minutes, it delves deeply into various aspects of the game, including frame rates, loading times, texture quality, and setting optimization.

The team pointed out that the game’s consumption of GPU resources is quite high compared to a standard PS4 and an RTX 3060 GPU. One would expect the PC GPU to outperform the PlayStation 4 in terms of technology, but surprisingly, this game is not doing so as Digital Foundry notes.

We should consider a GPU that offers approximately 3.5 times greater computing power, yet under normal conditions, the RTX 3060 doesn’t manage to double the PS4’s performance in this specific game when matched with similar settings.

This is a very large outlier in our history of examining PC ports.

Regarding the justification, that’s something for the jury to decide. As a result, your user experience might need to be adapted to suit these circumstances. To put it simply, you wouldn’t want to lower your PS4 settings below this point since you’d end up with a visual experience comparable to an older 12-year-old console.

As an enthusiastic gamer, I encountered frequent hiccups such as stuttering and frame rate drops during gameplay. At times, the game would freeze without any apparent warning, only to miraculously resume a few seconds later. Shadows were another issue, appearing unexpectedly even with top-notch settings – a bit jarring, I must say.

These issues weren’t present on the PS4 Pro backwards-compatible version of the game on PS5.
