Latest Steam Freebie Passes Incredible Milestone, But There’s a Catch

As a gamer, I jumped at the chance when Guntouchables became free on Steam for 24 hours after its launch. To my surprise, over 2,000,000 other gamers did the same! However, even though there’s been a massive influx of new players, only around 16,000 of us have played together at peak times so far. It was an unexpected and welcome addition to Steam’s free-to-keep games in August, causing many like myself to grab it without a second thought.

It’s not often that Steam offers free day-one releases, but in the case of the game Guntouchables, its developer chose this approach to gain attention and establish a reputation for the game. While this strategy seems to have succeeded in creating buzz around the game, it may not have led to direct benefits for the game itself.

2,000,000 Players Have Snagged Guntouchables for Free, but the Concurrent Player Count Remains Low

Swing Developer, creators of Guntouchables, shared that a staggering 2 million users grabbed the game for free during its Steam giveaway. In a heartfelt message, they acknowledged this generous offer as a significant gamble for their team and expressed delight that it proved successful. However, an interesting twist emerged – despite this massive user base, Guntouchables failed to attract many players simultaneously. The peak concurrent player count was 16,000, which means only about 0.8% of those who claimed the game have actually played it. In simpler terms, out of the 2 million users who received Guntouchables for free on Steam, a mere 16,000 have logged into the game so far.

Interested individuals should be aware that Guntouchables is a cooperative roguelike horde shooter designed for teams of up to four players. In this game, your team’s objective during each mission is to eliminate mutants while completing specific tasks, such as rescue or restoration missions. The game offers various character classes with unique special abilities and allows players to dynamically customize their builds using the upgrades and power-ups they acquire throughout the game.

The development for “Guntouchables” is ongoing, with plans for a significant post-launch update coming in September. This update introduces a player-controlled lobby known as the Bunker, which allows players to initiate matches while they wait for others to join. The developer anticipates that this will enhance the cooperative gameplay experience on Steam. Following the Bunker update, additional patches are expected to roll out, bringing new missions, enemies, challenges, character classes, cosmetics, and game modes to “Guntouchables”.

At this moment, Guntouchables boasts a favorable rating on Steam, with many reviewers expressing enthusiasm for its promise as an engaging roguelite. Simultaneously, they bring attention to certain drawbacks, such as missing user-friendly features and seemingly unnecessary AI teammates, which hinder the game’s full potential. Fortunately, the developer has already gained a substantial following, with Guntouchables appearing in numerous gaming libraries. If it persists in updating the game and taking community feedback into account, there is still potential for it to draw in more players.
