Latest Switch 2 Update Fixes Backwards Compatibility Issues for Some Games

On June 19, Limited Run Games announced that the most recent update to the Nintendo Switch’s software addressed certain compatibility issues with games using the Carbon Engine. Limited Run Games explained that games such as Tomba: Special Edition, Shantae, and River City Girls Zero should now function correctly on the Nintendo Switch 2 consoles when running on firmware version 20.1.5 or newer.

Similar to its previous version, the Switch 2’s operating system undergoes periodic updates to enhance performance, squash existing glitches, and sometimes introduce fresh user features. However, these updates often tackle a wide range of unspecified bugs and stability concerns. The update version 20.1.5 for the Switch 2 is an example of this, as its patch notes merely mentioned general system stability enhancements. To get the 20.1.5 firmware update, Switch 2 consoles need to be connected to the internet. After a quick download, the console will automatically reboot.

Following Nintendo’s vague details about the changes brought by the Switch 2’s latest firmware update, t Special Edition,” “Felix the Cat,” “River City Girls Zero,” and “Shantae.” Previously, some of these games would either fail to start up correctly or exhibit glitchy textures and performance problems.

In addition to announcing updates regarding backward compatibility, Limited Run Games also shared news about the issues some users have been experiencing with the newly released Gex Trilogy on the Switch 2. The company has already submitted a bug-fix patch to resolve these problems, but due to the ongoing Juneteenth holiday in the U.S., Nintendo’s approval process is taking longer than usual. Limited Run Games expects the patch to be released soon.

For now, the Gex Trilogy has been temporarily removed from the Switch 2 online store. This is because they are working on a compatibility update which needs to be tested before it can be re-released. As for other Carbon Engine games like Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection and Tomba 2, scheduled for release in 2025, we’ll have to wait and see how they fare on Nintendo’s upcoming console.
